Sadly, I am considering parting out my '86. I just can't get it to run worth anything, primary problem is intermittent dead cylinders. It has some nice parts on it namely the plastic, fuel tank, & brakes. Would a part out be preferable to selling as a whole?

Easier to just sell as a whole bike. If you don't mind the labor involved ( including listing and pricing all the parts) then you'll probably get more parting it out. Me, I wouldn't want the hassle. If you decide to part it out, I could use a tail section and tank if they're in pretty good shape.

I recently parted out my 86 VFR700 because the top end was toast.

Most of my parts were sold to this community and I made a decent amount of money compared to what I spent on the bike, and I think I gave everyone who bought a good deal.

You'll always make more parting it out, but that money will come in slowly over time and you'll need to take everything apart and sell it. I did sell a few things on e-bay as well but I'd start here on this forum and maybe head over to vfr discussion and try them out, although I didn't sell much to that community.

sorry you haven't been able to get er right bro. As a last ditch effort, I'd buy a set of used CDI boxes and if not that, I'd go with a used set of coils or at least the one that corresponds to the dead cylinder(s), also the pulse generator. I'm just sayin because for about 120 bucks maybe you could be good to go and have a running bike to sell vs a parts bike, just my two cents but I do understand there's a risk of spending more for nothing. Sounds more electrical to me since you've gone through your carbs a time or two already.

If you're going to part out, then go to this site also to sell. I know guys looking for 500 parts.
