Ground the wire at the sensor, it should peg the gauge. If not it is in the wiring or the gauge itself . Most often the sensor or the connection at the sensor.

    What do you mean, Toe?

what do you mean by peg the gauge?

You mean touch the connector to a ground and the gauge will move?

BRIEFLY !! very BRIEFLY or the gauge can be ruined !! Totally, utterly ruined !

A low coolant level that is below the sensor will give erratic readings, so check level under radiator fill cap.

It usually takes about 15 minutes of riding to move the temp needle off the bottom, in Canada up there near the Arctic circle maybe never.

Sorry Squirrel over looked both of those points, check your coolant level and if full ground the wire and we will go from there. You just want to verify that it moves the needle. Sender is a common failure given the age so don't panic.

Ok...so how am I supposed to ground the wire?

I tried to connect the connection wire to the sensor to ground and nothing happened.

Please explain exactly what I am supposed to do? Which Wire? Where? and how to ground?

    Thanks

You can just touch it to the body of the sensor itself where it screws into the housing, if nothing , then check the wiring to the dash itself. Make sure the plug and terminals are clean and connecting properly, most times this is a simple problem. If you have a meter check the wire itself to be sure it is not damaged.

Nothing happened...I 'll check the wiring at the back of the gauge..and the wiring leading to it.

Three wires operate the gauge, black /brown wire is system voltage from fuse and it is shared by dash lights so I assume you would have noticed the loss of several more functions if fuse was blown,green/black wire is common ground to gang and once again you should have noticed fuel gauge and dash lights inop if the issue, green blue wire is from temp sender. They will be in a six pin plug with a dark green wire, brown white wire and a yellow green wire. There is another six pin but that should make it clear what one you are looking for.

ok..disregard the last message...I finally figured out how to ground the sensor and the gauge moved... According to a source when the temp sensor is grounded and the gauge shoots up...the sensor is bad and must be replaced.

    IS this correct? thanks

What ever happened to the gauge problem here? My gauge just stopped working today. I'm thinking sensor since my other gauges still work. I'll have to do the ground test for the gauge operation.

Was this problem ever resolved? I don't want to start a new thread, just curious how this played out so I can fix my gauge. Thanks.
