So there's a Q & A video on MotoGP with the two Repsol riders and one of the questions was to Marc, which was, "If you could build the perfect rider by combining qualities of different riders, how would you do it?" Marc's answer, The experience of Rossi, The sensibility of Pedrosa, his own aggressiveness and the consistency of Lorenzo (I assume pre-Ducati days ). And possibly a few things from Maverick, "things you have to see" (He didn't say more than that).

Sounds like a a solid rider, who and what qualities would you use? I guess for the sake of making it fun, doesn't have to be a current rider but let's keep it to the MotoGP class if we can.

Two different category's here if we're talking fast guys. Like Gator said Dunlop & Mcguiness and Martin, those guys are just something else to behold. Then in the other category there was Doohan. But my hat tips to Stoner. The guy to me is just a wizard on two wheels. Honorable mention, Rossi

Well, thing is Ago won 10 TTs, 120+ GPs, and 8 world championships; none of those otherwise awesome true road racers won any GPs, let alone World Super Bike, etc. And that's not taking anything away from them. They're the best road course specialists, but not well-rounded...

In that do a reverse, I'm not so sure any of the moto gp supreme could keep up with those TT guys, it's a whole other world there.

No argument about Ago. He was the guy who actually caused the TT to be off the circuit. I just learned that from the Dunlop doc. I think it was right after yet another friend bit it there.
How about some of the Haslam and Dunlop battles? Good stuff. And back more on point Doohan and Stoner have to rank up there. I still suspect that if Stoner had not retired that he could have been the goat. That kid can ride anything fast. MM and Stoner would be some epic battles I bet. Could you imaging them both on the Repsol team? lol The Rossi/ JL wall would pale in comparison.

Experience quells undo aggression, so to some extent there is an inverse relationship at play. Where the proper amount of aggression and experience meet is the peak of a racer's career. MM is just about there now. He has maybe some maturing yet to do.

The mental side of things probably separates the great from the good as much as anything. I could be the most skilled rider in the world, but you'll never know because my instinct for self preservation kicks in well before my skill runs out. I have friends that are fearless, but their skill level is (while superior to mine) is not that of other riders who seem far slower.

If I'm limited to MotoGP, I'd say MM for skills, VR for mental toughness.

None of the MotoGP guys would get my vote for fearless riding though. The TT greats take the cake there.

I was out of MCs for a long time; why did Stoner retire?

Doohan was awesome; the injuries the man rode with...

Well, I was hoping more for people to give their rider(s) of choice and why, and yes Ago may very well be the GOAT, still would be interesting to see who picked who and why, I mean in the spirit of the question. Probably should have made the title Perfect MotoGP Rider to rule out the TT riders as they are indeed a different breed.

Going back to the intended topic, I do agree with with MM's choices and thought maybe adding Zarco to the mix as he seems to know when and where he can push it, all the while managing his tires. Stoner, if not just for his ability to take the Ducati to a title!

I think it was his distaste of the press and Dorna more than anything.

What? No mention of Fast Freddy?

I have long had the impression that Spencer was the first rider to purposefully drift a bike to (for the time) be unbeatable through esses.
