I have an 85 vf700f interceptor and was wondering what are some good mods to do as far a maintaining reliable performance and things that are good to update. it already has accell coils on it but I'm not sure if it has the oil mod. other than that, I think the only mod is the 4-2 cobra f1 exhaust.

A top end oiling mod is a must-have for sure. Other that that, I think it really depends on what you want. Most of the upgrades that used to be available (few, to begin with) are gone now, so it's probably best to start simple and see where that takes you.

    Good luck!

is there an easy way to determine if the top end oil mod has been done. I think the PO said it had been but I want to check to make sure. Also, what type of bulb does it have for the headlight/is it a single bulb hi/lo or dual bulb. I am looking at getting this kit.

http://www.ddmtuning.com/Products/DDM-35W-55W-Single-HiLo-Motorcycle-HID-Kit I'm looking at getting it in 55w 8000k. I have the 35w 6000k kit on my car and its awsome.

You need to look at the lines feeding oil to the heads (they go under the carbs). If they are black painted steel and start from above the countershaft sprocket then it's stock. If the lines are braided steel (most commonly) and come from somewhere else then it's been modded. You probably would have already noticed this, so my guess is that it's stock.

I wouldn't suggest putting any more load on the electrical system. I know that 55W doesn't seem like a lot, but you might be asking for trouble. It would be nice to have a better headlight though!

think the 35w is ok, or is that still to much strain?

No, the 35w HID should be less strain on the alternator, it just really depends on the current draw of the ballast.

once again re-enforcing the fact that I should have waited to find an 86 vfr750 like I actually wanted. oh well. In other news I took the bike out today for the first time this year. runs like a champ after putting new plugs in, feels alot snappier with the new chain and sprockets to.

Nah, contrary to what you might read, the 86-87 bikes are basically just First Gens with different bodywork. Although many of the parts do not interchange, most of the mechanical ones are very similar. The Second Gens certainly have a better chassis!

so basically, when I need engine parts I could almost buy anything 84-89? on the engine note, do you know where I can snag one of the oiling mods? I remember asking a local (not the one a normaly go to) honda place about it and I believe they said they would have a hard time getting one.

Not internal stuff, but the entire engines are interchangeable. The later VFR's have more hp, but if you were in a pinch and wanted to keep it running that would be an option.

Yesterday was a nice day so I decided to go for a ride. When I got back from my ride I decided to put on the new front turn signal stems and the new battery box I got. besides the fact that I put the front stems on the rear a week earlier (that made me feel stupid as I then removed them to put the correct ones on). When I took the battery box out I noticed a hose coming from the botom of the shock going into the rear swing arm (pics will follow shortly as they are on my phone) it has a piece of hose coming from the shock and a piece of hose from the swingarm with a chuck of hose and two plastic fittings connection them both. unfortunetly both the shock piece and the swingarm piece are dryrotted and almost non-existant. at this same time I noticed that it takes awhile for the shock to rebound when after it is pressed down. is it just due to the rubber hoses haviing a poor connection, or is my shock junk (I have never checked the air pressure of the chock since I got it).
