ride report from DUKE of motorcycle.com in sugo japan

Honda’s new VFR1200F in action at Sugo in Japan.

I’m here at the Sugo Sportsland racetrack in Japan, an odd place for what seems to be a sport-touring machine like the new VFR1200F. But my time at Sugo today was one of the most incredible riding experiences of my career.

First off, lets dispel the notion the VFR is a direct competitor to sports tourers like Yamaha’s FJR1300 or the Honda ST1300. It’s lighter and more nimble, with racier ergonomics. It’s also smaller in the flesh than it appears in photographs. More attractive, too.

Duke was mightily impressed with the VFR’s new dual-clutch transmission.

But what blew me away today is the VFR’s dual-clutch transmission. If you’re thinking it might be something akin to the FJR1300AE’s auto transmission, you’d be badly mistaken. The FJR-AE’s shortcoming is its initial response when pulling away from a stop, as a rider is never sure how the auto clutch will come on. No such issue with the VFR. In comparative terms, the FJR-AE’s transmission/clutch is a carburetor to the VFR’s fuel injection.

More amazing, though, is how well the dual-clutch gearbox works in automatic mode. There are hundreds of ways a racetrack can trip up such a system, and I’m thrilled to report no such issues. Leave it in the Sport setting of the automatic mode, and it is both smooth and cooperative, blipping the throttle on downshifts and upshifting near redline.

    sportrider ride report

"I could continue to wax poetic about what Honda's done here, but I think you get the idea. Honda has raised the bar yet again and it'll be interesting to see where this technology goes, both within Honda (possibly a DCT CBR?) and across the industry. Don't forget to stay tuned to the magazine for my full first-ride thoughts and impressions."

another ride report from motorcyclist online

"On the racetrack, DCT is flat-out amazing. Exiting Sugo's wicked-tight, first-gear chicane leading onto the front straight, you can pin the throttle to the stop and let bike works upward through the transmission like a Swiss timepiece all the way to the other end. Even at wide-open throttle, shifts are essentially undetectable and impossibly fast. Quickness isn't the only benefit; the DCT changes gears without interrupting power transfer to the driveline, to radically improve chassis stability. No matter how smooth you operate a conventional clutch-or even if you use an aftermarket quickshifter-the act of shifting unavoidably creates unwanted weight transfer that translates into chassis instability. This is especially problematic when you are leaned over on the edge of the tire, where traction is at a premium. DCT almost completely eliminates this unstablizing input so that the bike can safely upshift under power-even at extreme lean angles-without compromising traction."

"Both in terms of architecture and technology, this new 1200cc V4 borrows heavily from the RC211V MotoGP racer. We're won't go into too much detail here (look forward to the real first-ride report in the January '09 issue of our print magazine), but know that the larger displacement and added power very much suits the character of this new machine. It's not overwhelmingly powerful (butt dyno says around 140 RWHP, not quite on the level of a 1340cc Suzuki Hayabusa, or even the benchmark BMW K1300S), but the VFR1200F is plenty strong, with an absolutely proper big-bore V4 characteristic that are strong off the bottom and with a killer, 7000-rpm rush that maintains nicely all the way to the top of the tach."

Diggin' the white. The reviews have been kind. Don't know if I'd want an auto, but it's a cool idea.

Except for the nose, it sure looks really nice. The hard bag mount is impressive. Can't even tell there's a mount left behind when the bag was taken off, I like that.

love the tech on the bike, bike as i have stated quite well in my first post and given evidence of the old design from bmw, i HATE the front section, cant stand it.

and no i will not get use to it lol.

can somebody confirm if the design was from BMW? becuase if i was right about this it would cofnirm my thougts on the front end.

wonder what its like in silver just like the 07 model

oh my god, is it me or does that women need a few meals inside her.
