I spoke with a mechanic about this earlier. He said they are a complete pain. He did one for a bmw and it took 24 hrs. The VFR would be easier but expect a large amount of time to be spent.

Pretty easy to install, yes they are fiddly but can be put in place in an hr or less if you do the right preparation. As for Marribs mechanic depending on which bmw he is talking about most of them can be installed in less than 20 mins ie Gs ,Rt etc. I guess he doesn't like doing them.

I would recommend getting a service manual as it makes the job much easier.

We need more information. WHY would it need a new wiring harness? If enough damage was done electrically to really FUBAR the wiring harness, there may well be component damage as well - not just wire damage. In most cases if you do the 3 yellow wire fix (eliminate the Regulator/Rectifier plug by soldering the wires), sometimes install a new Regulator/Rectifier and SOMETIMES - worst case - a new stator. Installing the VFRness (I think a member here can supply that) and job done without replacing the complete wiring harness.

    Welcome to the World.

    Cheers,
    Glenn

I don’t think a main harness replace is that hard. But agree with the previous post and would have serious questions about why the owner believes it needs a new harness.
