Yesterday I went to a bike shop to look at a salvage Superhawk as a possible project bike. Came home with an RC51 project instead. The Superhawk was a piece. The RC51 is heavily damaged, but I've already found just about all the parts to fix it. So far I am having a lot fun collecting everything (and dumping some money) but in the end this should be a good deal. Total project cost should be around $4k to make it roadworthy. For those of you who dream of owning one, or any other bike for that matter, check out salvage title bikes. Pics are here.

I rebuilt a CBR 600 a few years back and it was a fun project across the board. Helped me bump my Ebay feedback score way up too. I've been watching a local salvage board for a few months and haven't found anything that I've felt comfortable bidding on. They've either been trashed beyond belief or just barely scratched. And at the last auction I went to a mildly tweaked CBR600RR still sold for around $5500. That is a bit steep for my budget, but I'll keep watching.

Cant wait to see your pics! Have fun.

Man that would be a fun bike, there is nothing like the sound of a large bore v-twin sportbike (except of course a V-4:).

Sorry I didn't finish the story up. 3 weeks after I got the beast she was on the road. Total cost was $4500 including a set of PP 2CT's. What a monster! This is a ridiculous bike that grips your soul while you ride it. I pretty much only refer to it as "The Beast". I'm very happy with it but when it comes time to get rid of a bike or replace one, this will be the first to go. Unfortunately its too cold to ride this right now (too much power, not enough grip) so she's up for the winter. There are a couple people interested in buying it for what I've got invested so I didn't lose any money. Too bad the "right" wrecked bike is hard to find. Glad I got this one...

A hawk flew up in front of me at an unknown speed (whatever 3rd gear is tapped) and lodged itself in what used to be the headlight. The stomach even popped right out through its chest. How did I know? There was a half digested frog leg inside the light and the rest was on the ground. Plus it had a small snake in its talons. If that had been my helmet I would have been in the hospital.

I couldn't find a smilie with a big enough puddle of drool to accurately represent my present state.
You have no idea how bad I want an RC51. Some people keep a Vette in the garage for the weekends.....I'll settle for a RC51. Unfortunately my wife just doesn't see it that way. The VFR is just too good of an all around bike to swap for a RC or I'd have already done it.

Never heard of anyone hitting a hawk before.

    Very impressive rebuild job!!

Exactly...but there's something special about dragging a knee on a VFR with bag mounts while on a cross country trip.

She's a handful on the track but I feel like I'm Nicky Hayden on it.

Does the RC51 feel heavier than the VFR? I think they are very similar in actual weight but as we know, the VFR weight practically disappears once in motion.

Curious how you'd compare the handling of the 2 bikes given the RC's track heritage.
