Just picked up a '99 VFR 800 FIX and I wanted to introduce myself to the forum. I've always been a car fanatic and the Porsche and BMW forums have been filled with great people and good advice.

By the way, the rear brake doesn't work and I thought I'd ask if there is common failure to check before I go through the basic troubleshooting steps. It acts like the rear master cylinder has leaked while the bike sat over the last few months.

Many thanks, and I'm glad to meet you all,

open the bleed screw and change out the old fluid with fresh fluid, then check that you have good thickness on the pads.

    it's too simple to fail.

VFR brakes are single-acting, meaning that the slider pins should be cleaned and regreased every time the pads are changed....

I just got my brake pads replaced, they were so worn the piston were had been sheared. The mechanic repaired them and i got new brake pads. Now when i ride and use them thoroughly they seize and will start to smoke. When they cool off they become loose again and work.

    what is happening here?

Sorry to respond to a hijacked thread but I would say your master cylinder is not working properly or there is air trapped in the system and possible bad hose. I would start by bleeding the system with new dot 4 fluid and see if that helps. It may also be that the caliper needs to be replaced due to the pistons being damaged. If its your gen 4 I may have some good used parts for you to try. Brian

TRY removing a small amount of fluid frrom brake reservoir; it should have some air space, not 100% full.
