lol..65 mph Speed Rating on My Cap

You're probably thinking...WHAT??? But I did one of those unthinkable things on my day off. I made a mockup VFR/Goldwing Windscreen out of a Sheet of Lexan . ...It's totally cool though, here's why - I can go 65 mph with my Cap on!!! I am totally not sh!ttin anyone...it fricken stays on like I am standing still. And here's the funny thing, it starts to just barely lift from behind at just over 65!! :biggrin:

And it's completely quite behind the screen - no wind at all. No helmet, no plugs, and I think I hit 77 mph before I noticed the mockup rigging I made started to buffet (not completely fastened - mostly quick taped).

I Locked in the cruise and called my wife and asked her how fast she thought I was going...that was a kick. 53 mph and holding a normal conversation!! Now how many Sportbikes can get away with that?

It takes some used to seeing it...but it's really not that bad for my first attempt. I could use some more contouring, but it's just a mockup. I also figured out the mounting points as well. I will say this, it handles good, but at 70 whipping around a corner, it feels like you grew an 8 ft dorsal fin on the pillion - it wants to stand into a corner! But it's a lot more controllable, smooth and predictable when it comes down to it - you just corner in more. .oh yeah...I have that Street Handlebar Setup too....that's how I can get away with this - otherwise my face would be less than a foot from the screen!!









What's really interesting is, I am going to put a shelf-like section where the top of my Givi Touring Screen meets the Lexan Shield, and also I am considering to make this section a part that breaks the shield in two. The shield is only 24 inches tall. And that's 12" x 14" wide and 6 inches deep - that's atually something sizeable enough to fit under the Givi-E52 that's on my list of things to get. So I could possibly undermount this with wingnuts to the inside of the Givi Screen, and break it down into two sections, and possibly tuck it under the Givi Topcase. But that just seems too easy, so it probably wouldn't work. Would be nice if it did though. Here's a pic of the Givi E-52 if it were to be installed on the Vif - a quick photochop



Just something I am tinkering with. It's a really neat convenient shield, and I can mount and unmount it as I need. Lexan only costed $36.00, and I think the 4 steel corner supports for the screen wouldn't cost much of anything, and the crossbeam-support would be alluminum with an alluminum shelf welded or epoxied into it - depending on cost and appearance. And it's really not that hard to do.

If I ever get past the 4 other things I am doing, I will start working on this, but for now - it's just a gee-wow, and probably a late fall project.

1) Between the handlebars & that monstrosity of a windscreen, your bike is in the running for the world's ugliest 6th Gen VFR.

2) You are a complete & utter moronic jackass. No helmet AAANNNDDD TALKING ON A FREAKING CELL PHONE WHILE RIDING?!?!? Are you freaking serious? There simply are not enough words in the English language to describe the depths of your stupidity. Before you ask, no I don't care if it was for "research" or whatever.

Yeah I usually wear a helmet, plugs, joe rocket armor jacket, boots - though no ankle protection, and an HJC-50 Comm System to talk to my wife ... did this to prove a point, CHRIST!!!! :hangme:

Felt good though. Like all the other reckless J/A'sses around here on their Harley's. The thing is helmets aren't required by State Law around hear, and I guess neither is common sense.

I just thought their'd be some other members out their that would want to see how to make a VFR a Highway Bike. That's a highway Screen for certain. And I do agree with you guys....it's kinda fugly in a sense, but ride this bike some time and you'll agree, it's works on you, it definately does!!

When's the last time you went 65 in dead silence and could hear just your motor and exhaust.

 

:laugh: Yeah Cruise Control is really something on a wide open country road. Almost as good as when I balance the bike at 60 or so with no hands with the cruise on just by leaning one side to the other. Maybe I jsut have better riding skills, who knows.

Funny thing is....understand the dynamics of a motorcycle at speed - two tires straight will stay straight at speed, or cause resistance when vearing off "at speed"... and it only takes one hand without gripping the bar to keep it straight with the cruise on.

Christ like you guys have never ridden a bike with cruise before.

Ever shift without the clutch handle - just throttle blips and pedal, or pedaling up soft....guess that's reckless too ...gees guess I'm just a real reckless SOB....ROFL .. so much for skill!!

I put a nice big windscreen on my nearly naked BMW and had a moment of worry at 65 when I thought "What's that sound, what? Oh, it's the engine, what's wrong with the engine? Oh, I can hear it now." (yes with earplugs etc.)
It's a good thing.

Dude, let me lay it down for you:
Riders must not make lifestyle (or even afternoon plan) decisions based on personal preferences when it's possible that others might disapprove of these decisions.
That is, beyond the first one, which was to ride one of the only types of vehicle which seat belts could actually make more dangerous.

I love to see people identify a problem they need to solve and then fab their own setup to solve it. I'm not a fan of the look, but it definitely looks like you did a great job on fab and finish from what I can tell in the picks.

The wind is going to jump up over the deflector, so as a possible Phase II you may try shortening the fabbed deflector and see how short you can make the deflector and still have the wind jump high enough to just run across the top of your helmet/head. Then see if you can make a new one at that height and also make it in a 1-piece so you can eliminate the existing Givi reflector. Just my 2-cents.
