Disposing of Used Engine Oil...?

Well,,, I am beginning to build up a stockpile of used engine oil leftover from my oil changes. There's probably about 12 individual quart bottles of used GN4 10W40 neatly organized on the ground just outside my garage, along with a half-filled 5-gallon bucket of used up SAE-30 leftover from my lawnmowers...

...my question is... what do you all usually do with your leftover engine oil? Is there somewhere that we can specifically go to somehow properly dispose it?

 

In Delaware, we have recycling bins you dump it into, BUT I've heard Autozone and other car parts places wll take it too. Give them a call.

your state/town/township should have a web site of some kind that says where you can take used oil as such to get rid of it. Or if you know someone who knows someone that has a oil burning furnace...

 

Here we pay an eco fee pn oil. A tax grab as far as I am concerned. But anyways, I buy my oil from the dealership and take the old stuff back there. No problem. I wouldn't imagine you would have any difficulty taking it to one of those quick lube places. The oil is recycled so there is value to it. For those in Canada, Canadian Tire will take it off your hands.

But don't be an asshat and pour it down the sewer. I am sure there is no one on this site that does that but you would be surprised how many do. A lot of sewers are just catch basins and the run off just seeps into the ground. And a large portion of the smaller communities get their water from aquifers.

 

Absolutely! There's no way that I would pour it down the sewer drains... Gotta do my part to protect and preserve the fishes, wildlife and overall environment.

The Jefferson Parish trash depot on David drive has a reclamation facility for oil, gas, chemicals, batteries, and antifreeze. they won't pay you but you can dump at their facility and they will take care of it,

I'm not saying I would. But if there's a charge to get rid of it, that's just asking people to dump it where they shouldn't......... I take mine to Auto Zone..... No charge.....

 

dump it in neihbors bushes..lol.........................put them in trash 3 at a time let garbage man take them to dump will help desolve the plastic bags faster.....

In NYS the DEC imposes the following requirements:

Accepting Used Oil

Service establishments that sell at least
500 gallons per year of new oil and
performs vehicle servicing must accept
from the public at no charge up to 5
gallons of used oil per person per day.

Retail establishments that sell at least
1000 gallons per year of new oil must
either accept used oil from the public, as
service establishments do, or contract to
have another service or retail
establishment accept it on their behalf.

Post a sign stating "WE ACCEPT USED
OIL FOR RECYCLING AT NO
CHARGE."

Retail establishments that arrange to
have another entity accept used oil on
their behalf must post a sign stating the
name and address of the contracted
establishment.

Remember: When you change motor oil
for customers, it is against the law to
charge them a fee for used oil disposal.
