I've recently had problems starting my bike, I would always need a jump start or a push start to start up my 86 Vfr 700.
I bought a battery today and put it in but i don't think that was the problem. When I started my bike I put a voltmeter at the ends of the battery and it only measured between 12.5 and 12.90.
What a VFR 700 suppose to charge at in volts?

Then I decide to check my R/R and it was really hot. Does that mean that is charging fine?

If my R/R is bad Which replacement part should I look for?

Also I've put an HID kit on it a few weeks ago did that cause my R/R to go bad if it is bad.?

    Thanks

No, the HID kit did not cause the R/R to go bad. It's probably just coincidence. See, a regulator rectifier does two things. First, it turns three phase alternating current from the generator into direct current that can be used by your bike's systems. That's the rectifier part, and it uses a series of diodes to make it happen. The regulator monitors and controls the amount of voltage by shorting to ground some or all of that voltage. This creates heat, which is dissipated to whatever the R/R is mounted to, and if it has fins, then also to the air around it. So, logically thinking, the more current/voltage you use, the easier it is on the R/R because it generates LESS heat. Here's a really good article by Electrosport, the maker of aftermarket and rebuilt charging system components. It's a pretty good read. zielarz I just bought my battery at walmart, looked in the book for my bike and it gave me a reference for a battery

Hawkrider Thanks for that info. Like now I ll start my bike up and then after running it my HID kit will start blinking and then just shut off. and after that, my bike won't start if I stop it.

hoobatech -- Iven when I rev it it doesn't go higher then 13v

Sounds like the R/R is toast. Should be at least 14V when revved above about 3k rpm.

+1 sounds like its toast, couldnt hurt to check all the wires and insure they are all making good contact, but its sounds like its time for a replacement

may also be your rotor could be 2 phasing... or even worse 1 phasing check your stator voltage first.. shoulld be about 20 volts ac disconnected from your reg at an idle also check the resistance of it whith it removed i always check each component before i booger pick an issue and start replacing parts

ive got an 86 vf500 thats not starting either. When i push the start button i only hear a clicking noise coming from under the seat. The battery is fully charged, i know, and the bike worked perfect the last time I had it out about a week and half ago. This problem has never happened before and the bike has only 12,000 miles. Is there a starter solenoid in there somewhere and could it be bad?
