A JIS screw typically has a dot on the head to identify it as such. I've been told that many Snap-on screwdrivers are JIS, and I have had better results when I make sure I use one compared to the others in my toolbox.

Yep, Honda quit using JIS screws and went to the ISO standard with the Honda CB750's in the 70's.

I thought, at the very least, you would have an official holiday celebrating P.L. Robertson's birthday up in Canada!

    Reed and Prince

Just incase it wasn't confusing enough.

Reed and Prince Screwdriver Reed and Prince screwdrivers are not interchangeable with Phillips screwdrivers. Therefore, always use a Reed and Prince screwdriver with Reed and Prince screws, and a Phillips screwdriver with Phillips screws, or a ruined tool or ruined screwhead will result. To distinguish between these similar screwdrivers, refer to figure 1-50. The Phillips screwdriver has about 30-degree flukes and a blunt end, while the Reed and Prince has 45-degree flukes and a sharper, pointed end. The Phillips screw has beveled walls between the slots; the Reed and Prince, straight, pointed walls. In addition, the Phillips screw slot is not as deep as the Reed and Prince slot. Figure 1-50.-Matching cross-slot screws and screwdrivers. 1-29

Well, I guess that this thread is useless. Who has a bike that old? Ooops, haha.

Strange that the source thread had several people chime in about the difference when using the JIS driver on newer bikes.

All carb bowl screws I have ever removed have been JIS. Not sure about anything else on post 70's Hondas but the carb. screws are still JIS. Yamaha and Kawi still uses them though and I only use a JIS driver exclusively at work (I'm a tech at a Yam/Kaw dealer and moving to our Honda store next week). Heliproz sells a set for about $20.

I thought about all of the screws on my carbs were JIS. Thanks for reassuring me I wasn't confused!

Thank you for the tech tip!

Do you know what number drivers are typically used on Honda's, i.e. #2 and #3?

On a side note - the 'dimple' on the screw head denotes JIS, correct?

Robertson is so much better than Phillips. At least when working with wood etc.

Totally agree...no self respecting wooden boat screw would be anything other than a Robertson or a Frearson drive.

Side note on a list of manufacturers offering the JIS series - Wiha is out, they do not offer a set. A bit of a bummer as they make a great product.

Ordered a set of Vessel JIS screwdrivers from RJR this morning.

The owner, Ross, was super helpful and has added a 'Motorcycle Set' to his site. This includes #1,#2 and #3 drivers - which should cover all the screw sizes used on our bikes.

Will follow-up with a post when they arrive. Thanks Michael E for the thread starter.

Far out. I was reading above and knew that the dot thing rang a bell. The float bowls have that dot to denote that spec you were talking about. A good Snap-On or other tool truck phillips head screwdriver usually does the trick. Could take a lesser one, read Sears and wack it with a hammer too. If that still doesnt budge I like the smallest pair of vice grip pliers i got and i just crank on that puppy and off it comes. Maybe I even replace them with a quality allen head. All this talk about cam out and stuff and no-body even mentions the pile of chit TORX fastener. Oh and dont forget its arse hole cousins, the tamper resistant torx and torx plus....Sheeesh...Its a conspiracy i swear.

Three nicely made JIS screwdrivers arrived today. Ross from RJR was great to work with offering a new combo kit for motorcycles. Shipping was super fast, arriving within three days of placing the order. Now it's time to tackle those carbs!
