Follow these steps. I basically did the same thing except I did a final spray of clear over the polished resin. Just get some fiber and a good epoxy resin(I used West) and you'll be fine. Oh, it's nice if the part is black first. All the parts I did were black plastic but if not, paint your piece black first because the the fibers will separate on corners and if the part you're covering is lightly colored, it will show through. Post up your pieces when done!

cool thanks, I was way off.
I thought you used the pc as a mold but it is just an overlay.
I got a new winter project now.

I was going to make the pieces from a mold of the stock piece. But after reading up on mold making, it was clear that the first piece I was doing was going to be difficult so I said what the hell. It was pretty trashed to begin with so I had nothing to lose.

Overlay is cool if you have a part that has loose tolerances for fit. Too much material and the part may grow to a point of not fitting properly.

Soon....

After seeing your Soon video... I stumbled across this thread and read it non-stop. Very awesome build. I recall riding around town 23 years ago on my new '86 VFR750 with a bud on his VF1000R and another with the VF500.

When I saw your video, I was convinced it was a new Honda 2011 model. But then I paused on the picture and noticed a (very) few familiar hints of what it was. For a moment, I thought Honda was following Triumph and the "retro" bike craze.

What can I say that has not been said already? Nuttin... but wow and thanks for sharing.

Kind words Bernie. It has been a long journey with this thing. Sometimes I question the sanity of laying up your only bike up for 20 month's but I think it will be worth it. I still have to make a seat and possibly a windshield, mount the turn signals and brake light, then sit down with a bunch of wrench's and recheck every single nut, bolt, and screw. Modesty forbids me from gushing but it does look amazing in the daylight.

Would love to, I've made that climb many times, but she's not done yet. Maybe next year!

No such thing as a "lowly VFr750".

Now that the test fitting of the panels is done, it's time to start putting on the pretty parts.

The CBR gas cap looks good on the VF750 tank. Hard to believe it looked like this after the welding. BEFORE

Very nice work!

What type of paint and clear coat are you using? Will you be sealing the inside of the tank?

Perfect job on that gas tank, wow! What a lot of work - but now you can enjoy it,
Did you treat the inside of the tank with anything?

Thanks guys. Yes I did seal it first. I used a product from Caswell. The best tank sealer I've used. It actually doesn't care if there is still some rust in the tank. This stuff formed a clear, hard coating that was easy to put in. Literally one step. I did etch the tank first but didn't need to. I ran air through the fuel line and alternated between on and res and that kept the lines free. I got it here.

Sounds like a good product.

I am in the process of having the lower rear seams restored on my '84 tank (VF500F).

They are welding a few pin holes and will feather the white paint while keeping the rest of the paint & decals stock. The paint is about factory perfect on this tank so I was very glad to hear that they could do this without having to repaint the entire tank.

Those rear seams are a bear - as many know - and after 25 years I could see surface discoloration in the paint so I decided to be preemptive and have this repaired before the rust worked its way through.

After this is complete I would like to seal the inside.

I've been looking at using this product as well. Glad to hear that you think it works well.

Whats nice about this stuff, if you're trying to save the paint, is there isn't a bunch of steps where you are pouring in non-paint friendly chemicals and then trying to get them back out without spilling them everywhere. Man, if your tank is already pretty clean and just want some insurance on the seams, this stuff is perfect. You probably don't even have to juggle the thing around to get every surface.

Good deal, thanks! I'll give this a go.

Back to your project bike, any more high-res photos in your back pocket? Too tempting not to ask ;-)

It shouldn't be much longer and I know what you mean. I LOVE following builds, I don't care what bike it is. Unfortunately, there don't seem to be many going on right now.

Any photos that may or may not exist were only for test fitting of the panels and I desperately needed a psychological shot in the arm, it's been a long damn road. I don't really want to snap any before the shield is on. Maybe I'll have to do a "Soon II, The Sequel" video.

had big plans do do some mods on my 02 this winter but that is shot to hell now due to quitting my job.
but after seeing this thread and a few older ones on the 1000 I have to get one and do it up.
Also ult bike build for me will be a 500cc 2 stroke motor in a VFR 400 chassis.

have to say you're doing an awsome job, the exhust looks fantastic, I had plans to do a moto gp type on my 02
2 rear out the tail and the 2 front to come out below where the cat is. maybe next year.
