1984 honda interceptor engine vf500f

    Hi gang. First post here. Thanks for your time.

    So I recently bought a really nice looking 1984 HONDA INTERCEPTOR, got it for what seemed like a decent price. Got it tuned up and a new chain, 800 bones. Then a week after getting the pro check up it went sour. It looks like the rod bearing on the no. 3 cylinder went bad. This could be due to low oil pressure from the oil pump, or low oil levels in the past, or poor past maintenance.

    So...my question is, do i sit and wait and find a new motor with low mileage? or maybe get another bike and use this now old one for parts.

    My other question is how are the parts and engines interchangeable to the 1986 VFR 700F Honda Interceptor to this 1984 VF500F.

    Thanks again. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    The only parts that will fit your bike are parts from a 1984-85 VF500. 1986 has some different parts.

    If you want a 700 get a 2nd gen VFR or go 50cc's up and get a newer Gen VFR

    sorry for your trouble.

    I recommend you punt and take field position over wasting any more time and money.

    Do some reading in the 1st gen forum and you will see that model is not reliable. with time and patience, you may find another motor for couple hundred bucks. If you want to ride any time soon and not worry about future problems, move on.

    Bummer.

    If I could ask how many miles were on the engine?

    Purchasing a used engine is tricky to say the least as these engines often suffer from years of neglect.

    Finding a low mileage VF500F is really your best bet. You could then keep (for spare parts) the bike you currently have or sell for parts - depending on how much room you have in the stable.

    Just above 40K.

    I found a 1986 VFR 700 with 30K. You think I could head down the same road with that one?

    Well, I guess riding these bikes these days is a crap shoot. So no one could answer that question correctly. I guess im just bummed that i finally got this bike and it crapped on me. Would love to give it another go. But spending 3K or so every month is not my ideal.

    I guess my question is, how is the 1986 VFR 700F? Is there something I should look at in particular when giving her a once over?

    Wow.....everything is cheaper in America. except health care :tongue:

    I went from a 1986 VF500 to a 1986 VFR750 and the VFR is a much nicer bike imo. More comfortable, feels lower, more power, better instrumentation, gear-driven-cams.....etc etc.

    But it all depends on how the bike was treated. The 2nd gens aren't known for cam wear but mine has it. Not bad but there shouldn't be any.

    The only thing you need to worry about with the newer gen VFRs are the Reg/Rec and other electrical gremlins. Still a worry but not as bad as the Valvetrain issues the first gens are known for.

    But with old bikes.....there's always something

    40k is a tough go on 500 if it hasn't been carefully maintained.

    Really with any used bike you need to do your due diligence. 30k on a VFR could very well be fine but I would recommend talking to the owner in detail about the bike's maintenance history.

    Are you thinking of making the jump to a larger displacement bike? If you want to stay in the land of more nimble steeds but are looking for a newer bike the CB-1 400s and Hawk 650s are good choices.

    ...only rode on sunday and two oil changes per season. it scares me when the RPM's get over 5000k and I'm selling so I can get a cruiser........

    seriously. and i bet it isn't. he said the miles were just above 30K. i also asked when was the last time he had the carbs cleaned...doesn't know. (red flag)

    so im just going to show up with a grand in hand. he can take it or leave it.

    price for that bike $1500. 3rd and 4th gen for what he's asking. I've even found 5th gen 2000 in nice shape for $3000.

    You really want to find cheap bikes, hold on to your cash and shop in California.
