VF500F Valve Lash Adjustment OEM Tools

For reference, here are a few photos of the Factory tools used in setting the valve clearance (AKA valve lash) on the VF500F.

When adjusting the lash these tools are designed to work with the square head of the adjusting screw (AKA tappet) and the 8mm lock nut:



The 'Valve Adjusting Wrench 8x9mm' (07708-0030100) has a large offset to reach the lock nut and the 'Adjusting Wrench B' (07708-0030400) is designed to fit the square head of the tappet:

Thanks for this, I was going to post pictures, but what I have is from my phone and not near the quality these are!

I looked all over for pictures of how to do the valve adjustment, so I edited it to try to give the clearest idea to anyone who hasn't done one before, it sounds much scarier than it is, so get your hands dirty and do it! (for some reason I thought I was going to be measuring between the rocker and cam lobe, luckily I had a friend helping who had done one before)

 

All this talk about these tools made me just now go and order them from David Silver Spares in the UK. There just so happens to be one of the small yellow adjusting wrenches for sale right now on ebay, but for the same $28.50 I got both tools from the UK to glorious SoCal for about $27 USD to my door.

PS I'm doing my first valve adjustment (with list member help, of course) this weekend on my 94 VFR750. If all goes well and these tools come in, looks like next up is the 84 & 85 VF500F's.

FYI: Just in case any of you were thinking about ordering, don't be in a hurry. I ordered them yesterday. Today I got this back when I emailed about possible delivery times:

"Delivery is quoted at late June as there is no stock in Europe."

No stock? I guess Honda sells enough of these to justify someone actually MAKING them?
I was under the impression these were brand new, yet old stock, sitting somewhere in Europe, and when they were gone, they were gone. Sounds like I was wrong.

 

FYI: Wow. Got my package from the UK today. Complete surprise. 12 days total wait time from UK to SoCal. Not bad at all.

Just a tip: instead of using two feeler gauges under the tappets, use a single one between the cam lobe and the rocker arm. Just reduce the thickness by 1.5 (the rocker arm ratio) to determine the correct feeler gauge to use. You can then snug the adjustment screws against the valve stems and lock them in place. Once you remove the feeler gauge you can double check the clearance at the valve if you are anal (like me).

I've found this method to not require the special tools as it's easier to do.
