i was looking up the parts fiche thinking it would be easy to find and order one, but it's not listed with a part number...? Anybody ever bought a replacement pulley? It's bolted onto the end of the throttle shaft of the #1 carb.

Are you talking about the bar end one or the one on the carbs?

I think you're SOL on that one - I've never seen a carb pulley sold as a separate part, and I've looked at a LOT of exploded carb parts diagrams.

Out of curiosity, why do you need one?

That's what i was afraid of. It looks like the previous owner tried to pry off the throttle cables and broke off about a 1/3 of the pulley--the section with the two holes and slots is gone...

Seems like your best bet now would be to find a "garbage" set of carbs on eBay now... :-(

I had to deal with this problem once when a set of carbs i cleaned for a VFRW member, returned back to Wisconsin, was damaged in shipping by USPO. Insurance paid about $500, and i was able to guide the guy to fix it cheap, so he profited nicely.

As far as i know, the only way to fix it is to grind or dremmel off the peened-over brass throttle plate screws and remove the shaft, then replace with one you've found online or from a salvage yard and being careful to secure the new screws properly, and you do need new screws and need to know where to get them.

Maybe someone better informed could say how to remove the pully from the shaft, but i wouldn't attempt it.

But i'd ALWAYS try a JB fix first cuz i'm cheap and hate spending money.

The 1st gen carb pulley is in the middle of the front bank, which contributes greatly to the PITA factor most folks suffer in getting those carbs off. For the 2nd and 3rd gens, they moved the pulley to the end of the #2 carb shaft (pressed or swaged on to a round shaft), so it is easier to get cable off/on, as long as you loosen the adjuster and jam nuts first. For the 4th gen the pulley got moved to the end of the #1 carb, but it is simply bolted on a threaded portion of the shaft that has two flats machined across that lock the pulley orientation--it's not gonna slip. So now the 4th gen pulley can be easily accessed and even removed for servicing, etc.--just look at that product improvement over 4 generations! but the irony is that the pulley has no part number and is not available...

Thanks for the offer--i will do some research into the pulley configurations. i would hate to cannibalize from another VFR, but now those VT700 Shadows are fair game--it's open season and there's no limit...
