Dan did a great job on the kit and it was only topped by his thoroughness with clothing design. T-shirts came in the mail today and I really like them. A nice touch to a great project.

I must say that all my concerns are behind me and could not go back to a stocker. Well worth the money and effort by a long shot, this bike is alot of fun. Dyno run is next.

thread jack ---- not sure I'm buying this. Using suspension springs as an example, you adjust preload (shimming) to change ride height and geometry but it doesn't affect the spring 'rate'. i.e., if she wobbles in the corners because the rate is too weak, shimming the spring doesn't fix the problem.

same thing here, the clutch slips so adjusting preload it seems would do little to correct the problem.

TC - that's a killer shirt! Dan has a real sense of humor.

OK......did not want to join in on this shim discussion but having measured a whole bunch of springs in the last week or two there are a few things to consider. Coil bind is the most important as that was the biggest problem I came across while trying to find another spring option before Dan gave me the heads up that Barnett technical was so willing to help. I really was surprised and did not expect the way they bent over backwards and spent time with me to review options. That being said, if you can find a spring that can be shimmed withoot binding it will help in this application but would consider that a very poor idea and a last ditch option. I did consider it though.

It is true that shimming does not change the rate of a spring. The force (or pressure) a spring applies (F)= spring rate (K) times deflection (X).

Hooke's law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In other words, the more a spring is deflected from its relaxed state, the more force it applies. So by shimming, at all points in the clutch's (or valve's) travel the more force the spring is applying because it starts out more compressed than stock and is more compressed than stock at any point throughout the clutch's travel. The same can be accomplished by leaving the deflection alone (no shimming) and using a higher spring rate. Change either K or X and the applied pressure changes. Changing both ups it even more.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the idea of adding a steel and a friction to the pack and using thinner pieces was to keep the clutch installed height the same as stock while adding more surface area to the clutch. For any given amount of spring pressure, more surface area = more grip - the clutch has multiple frictions and steels to provide a large surface area within a small diameter. So the idea of adding a steel and friction in the clutch pack seems valid and would be enhanced even more by higher rate springs. If the stock or even 75 lb springs would hold the hp/torque with the added discs, that would be a nice solution to keep the clutch lever pull more like stock.

Agreed on the shirt - it rocks. Proves Dan's following the thread . . .

Seems like the spring questions and some statements are both right and wrong. People need to indicate what they are talking about. A straight rate spring has pretty much the same spring rate once you load it enough or take up and put enough tension on it. A progressive spring does change rate or increases as compression occures ie... when you add shims used to be in Front forks but its a more expensive spring. Biggest thing is you need to know what your working with Straight Rate or Progressive. Anybody else care to piss in the pot.

    LOL Crusty.

Thanks for the update, Toe. That's good stuff by both A&A and Barnett!

It is great to see some manufacturers still provide REAL customer service!

Lots of manufacturers have great customer service. We need to listen more carefully to which number we are supposed to press on the phonepad to get serviced.

"To get serviced, press nine and then the pound sign and bend over."

That might be the message on the numbers you regularly call BB... But that's OK, they even let folks like you openly serve in the military now, so be proud!

So since you are a guy that is in the know, would you have a number to call Honda about all the R/R's that have crapped out on VFR's costing thousands of dollars in replacement fees, time lost, rides cancelled and generally Hondas great customer service on a known parts failure. Or are you just in one of those snits when there is nothing more you can think of to say when all that intimidation shit you used to be able to get away with in the Corps worked on a bunch of kids. Nice try Gunny.

Shall we add homophobe to your list of accomplishments too as well as not getting the satire?

I agree that there must be another place for this. Do I need to cut off another finger to get back on subject? I am not above that and could use some more time off. :hss:

A good question, maybe best fielded by Bad Billy in another thread. Come up with a title and I will start it or maybe you can.
