A friend of mine has an '01 VFR with about 5,500 miles. It was dropped when new on the right side leaving it with a very small scratch. Then recently it was dropped on the left side in a slide and has a lot of paint rubbed off the right side, but nothing is cracked or broken. I test drove the bike and it seemed fine to me.

I have owned a Yamaha Vstar (cruiser) for the past 4 years and was always interested in adding a sport bike to my collection. I saw this as an opportunity to maybe get a bike cheap, ride it for a while, them maybe fix it up if I really like it.

I think the guy owes about $3,200 on the bike. Is this bike something I should even consider, if so what do you think I should offer?

I dont think thats a bad price. I dont know what 01's go forbut yuo can look online at traderonline.com to get some idea or even look at nada to see what the book is on a used bike and adjust accordingly. I gae 2700 for my 93. it wasnt perfect either and i was willing to pay that amount. If you know someone who can do body work and can paint then thats a benefit to you. How much were you told about the slide? Such as speed, did th bike hit anything else in the slide, etc. If it were me, I'd offer about $2900 and negotiate from there. If they are firm on the price and you are willing to pay the $3200, I say go for it.

If the bike is damaged, even though it appears fine & fixable it will cost more than you think it will @ the moment; projects always do. I did not look up the NADA value before responding but being that it is damaged even though it is minor I would not pay more than 70% of the NADA TRADE value. It may mean your freind will take a loss but if he isn't going to fix it prior to your purchase he should expect to take a loss.

The bike has a few upgrades and NADA shows low retail @ $4,100, high retail @ $5,450. I think I would offer $3,000 cash.

In my initial research I have not been able to figure out if aftermarket fairings are available and how much they would cost, or how much factory replacements would cost.

Also it seems that the preventative for this problem (frame sliders) are only available from non-US suppliers??

Why not take it to the dealer. Mine is always willing to offer estimates, perhaps if you had the damage assessed as well as the repair costs, then subtracting the cost of repairs from something in the range of low-high retail might offer a good price point. Obviously, if you're buying from a friend, you're looking for a fair price, not to screw anyone over, so I think this would be your best option.

In my opinion a dropped bike is a great project to work on if funds are available. I bought an 86 that is in need of a serious resurrection. Id say go for it but try to get the price down.

No sweat! It happens all the time. We all pretty much know the meaning of "RTFM". My suggestion for the day is to create a new though difficult to pronounce acronym to be used for occasions as we are seeing here. ;)

    RTFT= Read the fucking thread..

    Hmm - well spotted Badbilly:hail:

Another "Holy back from the grave thread revival Batman!"

Just a thought for the Mod's on here...

A while back I came across a Forum which has enabled a safety net feature where if you attempt to post on a thread where the last post was more than 90 days before, it automatically reminds you - "do you really want to post on a thread where the last post was xxxx date" - and your post won't appear unless you confirm "yes I want to post on this ancient thread".

I am not sure if that sort of function is available on the current VFRWorld forum software, but if it is, it might be worth enabling to reduce the number of very belated posts.

I have seen this technology used on forums dealing with milk, English muffins and Twinkies.

This forum sent me a notification of this thread revival and thought I should come back and provide an update in case anyone wanted closure.

The bike turned out to be a great deal for me. I learned out to do some maintenance (first sprocket and chain replacement, brake fluid flush, etc). I never wrecked the bike or dropped it, so after about 6 months, I traded it in for a brand new 07 FZ1. So, as Scubalong suspected, the bike was bought and sold a while back. And actually, I've since sold the FZ1 (last year) and now just playing with my 4 wheeled toys.

My bike was knocked over by my neighbor. Damage looked minimal. The cost to repair was almost 3 grand including labor at the dealership.

Three grand in Canadian money is about $54.95 USD.
