Hey guys i bought an 86 interceptor vf500, i bought a set of carbs off ebay now it will fire and idle with the choke on no problem but dies if i turn it off, it also starts smoking pretty b ad after it a few minutes.BTW the carbs i bought might not be california carbs(im in ca.)I cant really tell what color the smoke is,i have an idea its oil as it has a slight oil smell not fuel, could these all be caused by one problem or more likley different problems? i hpr its an easy fix as im getting fed up with this bike please help thanks rlg5

That's not a good bike for people easily frustrated, lacking tools & some mechanical experience or depending upon it for basic transportation. How many miles on the little blighter ??

Won't run w/o choke= vaccum leak or more likely clogged pilot jets.

Smoke= bad headgasket, cracked head, worn pistons/rings, maybe over-filled oil if you're very, very lucky.

    Good Luck :nelson:

I did a dry compression check and got 70 lbs in the rear and 90 in the front cylinders , haven t squirted in any oil yet and rechecked yet, got any idea what the compression
should be, i looked in specs and all i could find was compression ratio, does that sound kinda low?

You should have about 120 psi cold and 180 hot on an engine in good shape.

    No easy fix.
