Rode home yesterday in the rain, wasn't cold out (23'C), but my engine temp never dropped below 76'C once it got up there, which was still 2-3x faster than before the thermostat was fixed. Will have my first post new thermostat fuel tank done tomorrow.

How long did it take to get up to temperature? City or Highway riding?

It takes about 2-3 minutes to get up to ~76'C, from start. I start my bike, put on my helmet and gloves and then start riding. And for those couple minutes it's usually about 70kph riding.

Alright, my first "post thermostat replacement" fill-up got me about 38.8mpg. Which isn't miles above what I was getting before, but it is easily my best mpg this year so far and I wasn't taking it easy and even had a flat tire during this tank. Again, my Fuelly link will show the whole story.

What units are you using? Imperial mpg?

At a conversion of 1.2 to get imp mpg, it looks to me like you are going ok.

I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just comparing to my pre-thermostat replacement mileage. I was hoping for a bit more, but we'll see, it'll take more time to get a good average.

Your mileage is looking very similar to mine. I ordered a t-stat anyways to be safe - I have no idea how old the one is that is in the bike now.

The one time I used non-ethynol 87 I dropped below 40... the bike did not like that for some reason. I don't think I've ever dropped below 40 besides that time since I've owned it.

Just finished a ride into Texas and back, by the odometer 471 miles, and used a fraction over 8 gallons; works out to 58.something mpg. Which is impressive as hell, especially considering I spent every mile I could somewhere between 70-80(Texas roads make that easy).

I've never checked my odometer against known readings, but I do know that the miles ridden compares accurately with what my truck has shown on the same trip.

Correction, also noted in a post later in the thread: lost a receipt and just found it. Adding that in makes it 49mpg, which sounds a lot more like it.

I need to keep the damn things all in one place...

I honestly think something is wrong with your math there. 58 mpg just isn't feasible at those speeds unless you had a 50kt tail wind and were following 5 feet behind a semi the entire time. The 5th gen statistically gets a little better mileage and the best I've seen is right around 50. And that was on relaxed rides averaging around 50 mph.

I agree ... I'm incredibly skeptical of that number.

Best I ever had so far was 42.7 MPG with a tail wind, averaging about 75 MPH between Grand Forks, ND and Winnipeg, MB (Canada).

I could believe high 40's depending on altitude and conditions, but not high 50's.

yeah, on interstate trips with those speeds I sit right around or just shy of 40 mpg (unless I'm fighting a headwind, I've seen as bad as 32)

If you're getting 58 mpg at interstate speeds, you could make a fortune with that fuel map. :greedy_dollars:

I bet his gearing is not stock and he has near a %20 error going on.

Stock gearing. Could well be some error there, but that's what it works out to. Went back over the distances using Mapquest, figuring the in-town stuff while down there it works out about the same, and the fuel amounts are from the gas pumps.

Surprised the hell out of me, that's far better than I've ever shown before. On highway I've regularly had from a low of 42(with nasty headwind) to 47(quartering or tail wind), and once got 52; never been high 50's like this before.

Update: I lost a receipt, and just found it. Adding that in makes it 49mpg, which is a lot more like it.

49 is still way too high on a trip averaging 70-80mph. 39 is more likely. It's entirely possible your speedometer is reading 10 mph+ faster than actual speed. I've owned numerous Hondas where this was the case.

Pretty easy to figure out what the bike's error is. Load up one of those free GPS speedometer apps on your phone and go for a ride.

This is a new to me bike & I'm still getting used to riding it....lol

Can't say the mpg is great on it as:

    1st tank - 191miles - 20.58 litres
    2nd tank - 87miles - 19.7 litres
    3rd tank - 125miles - 20.05 litres

but on a plus note - the tyres are no longer square & the suspension I'm getting used to...

It has been said that I ride with enthusiasm...!!

87miles!? That's like 17mpg! That's horrendous! Were you towing a boat in first gear?!

No just un-squaring the tyres the previous owner 'kindly' had put on the bike.....

    It's not like I'm the largest guy on the planet either - 5' 6 & 150ibs
My previous worst was 17.6litres for 90miles on a CBR600rr7 - however that was commuting 20miles each way on that bike.

I may try the 'driving miss daisy' approach for a couple of weeks. Lol
