Spotted a '98 VFR chained up to a fence, rotting its life away. What can be done about this?

The sticker on the left fork leg may be a clue to ownership. Government access maybe. Run the plate.

    The pic has been "photoshopped".

The first thing that pops into my head is then bike is not worth fooling with. The stack of tickets and the paper work along would be daunting to straighten out. The state makes saving abandoned bike next to impossible. I do not know anything about New York law, in such cases, but i do know that in Texas, a pile of tickets would follow the bike. Here you would have to get a bonded title, pay for all the back taxes, have the bike appraised so they can charge you the maximum sales tax and then you have to buy a $90 bond. (This is just in Texas). It can be fun and rewarding to save a bike, just don't expect to get a bargain.

If you are interested have the DMV or a cop friend run the numbers and see who owns it. Failing that contact the building management and show interest. Maybe they would be happy to have you haul it off. It is really difficult to take position of an asset without the owner's knowledge or without official authorization.

Parking citations are non moving violations. It is the owner, not the bike that is cited. The statutes in Texas and New York may differ greatly. The bikes owner may be deceased. Getting dead guys to pay traffic tickets is a bitch. Some harleydoods only seem dead..

IN NY u can get a bond title if the bike was abandoned, and if no one claims the bike within 3 years, you can apply for a title in your name.

Maybe the owner is locked up. :sorrow:

Wrong thread probably but anyone have a rough idea on how long a standard chain and sprockets should last on a 1999 bike.Mileage preferably.

An OEM-quality chain last about 20-25,000 miles, and a cheaper one much less.

Thanks for that. Bought the bike 5 months ago and the seller assured me he had changed it 6000 miles ago.Persuaded my company to buy it as London traffic is ridiculous. (Service engineer on office equipment )Chain is now bouncing even after adjustment. Love the bike and expect to put a potential 15 k a year on it.

getcher rear wheel up and spin it, checking for a series of loose-then-tight spots on the chain. if so, chain probably needs replacement, along with both sprockets, guvna.:livid:

Always be sure to adjust the chain at the tightest spot and when it's cold. put the bike on sidestand after adjusting to be sure it's still OK.

My son bought a VW Jetta with a bunch of outstanding tickets. I guess, here in Texas at least, it is the car because he was harassed until we just changed the plates.

Here, the parking tickets (Non moving violations as BB pointed out) are issued to the Registered Owner for the plate. Plates here stay with the owner and are transferred to new vehicles. They do not stay with the vehicle. I always thought it was odd that California plated stay with the car. I guess that is more the norm in the USA. Not here. I think right across Canada, the plates get removed from the vehicle when the vehicle is sold or destroyed. The only thing you really need to worry yourself about when squiring a used vehicle here is if there is a lean on it or is is stolen. Run the VIN through your local police before exchanging funds.

Awe Randy, just across the border here the plates go with the vehicle, unless they are personal plates, then those stay with the owner of said plate. Here as far as abandoned vehicles you get a registered letter showing you tried to contact the last legal owner from the address on the registration, from that you get a temp title that you hang on to for 2 years, then once no one comes back for it you can re-title into your ownership.

If you latch onto an apparently abandoned auto, make legitimate and documented attempts to locate the last legal owner, then sink some money into the vehicle and the owner shows up just shy of the two years, he gets your improvements for free? Or would you have a lean on that vehicle?

Not that I have any interest in latching onto an abandoned vehicle.

Are vehicle codes (laws) different from province to province? State codes can be very different from state to state on some issues.

Some states have their entire vehicle codes online.

Not much so far on that invisible engine.

Yes BB. In BC we have several "Acts" pertaining to motor vehicles, the two more common being the Motor Vehicle Act which covers operating offences including parking and the like, and the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations which deals with primarily aspects of the vehicle like lightinv, brakes, noise and all safety devices as well as registration and transfer of ownership. There are many other acts and regulations including Coloured Gasoline Tax Act that covers use of purple fuel l(tax free fuel). Each province would have similar acts and regulations which really cover roughly the same issues.

Looks like someone already stripped off parts, no shifter on left side. Scrape marks on clutch lever indicate that it went down on left side. Maybe PO removed shifter (broken) and mirrors. Inside of gas tank should be lovely.
