This last weekend I took the Y2K VFR to Wilmington to watch the Ohio Mile. One mile run on a 9000 ft runway. They had all manor of cars and motorcycles and if they had covered the runway in Morton's Salt I might have thought I was in Utah.
I am looking for a project and don't want to get back into racing cars (too old and lazy) However, the prospect of picking up a VFR that is in need of engine work and tuning it into a mile runner could be fun.
Don't need a 216 mph Huyabusa but it might be fun to see how fast a vfr would be....anybody ever played around with this?

Forgot all about it being this past weekend. I'd like to run my bike but all bikes need steering dampeners. Don't have one. I think there is one in sept I'd like to attend to watch.

Candyred or something like that has done 1/4 mile and has gotten the times down. You may want to pm him. Once you get the motor tuned to run good then it's just gearing and weight.

Sounds like a fun challenge... Wouldn't mind seeing if I could squeeze all 158mph out of her stock. I *heard* that they feel great upwards of 130, but can't really find out much on public roads.. :)

Another of our regulars has done the Texas Mile on his VFR. He is on his way to Pikes Peak as we speak. Awhile ago there was a guy from UK who cobbled an older VFR together and did Bonneville and made a great video out of the experience. Like Grey sez,, Candy Red is a fast guy with a shitload of hands on tech savvy.

The peanut gallery will want pix. They have some autopilot thing going.. Pix are good but timing slips are mo bettah..

I am surprised that Honda Inc doesn't provide some sponsorship pesos to privateers who are able to do a lot of the work on a racebike with the Vfour bangers.. Honda Inc. seems not to cover some of the bases, concentrating on road type racing. Emphasis here on Honda Inc..

I am intrigued with the idea of cobbling one out of an older VFR. Any idea of where to link to the guys video of the Bonneville project?

    This should get ya there:

One of the real fast guys here asked me where I find stuff that I post here. Big Google fan.. I read a book once called "Google Hacks". it got really hairy about 2/3rds of the way through. The first few pages contain the "message". When using Google or most search engines you are not speaking to anyone, so English or any other language including Canadian (weird stuff) ain't gonna work..

In a nutshell the first few pages went through a drill of how to find when Barbra Streisand married James Brolin. Googling "barbra streisand" gets a shitload of sites, Same for "james brolin". What is needed is relational terms including dates ect.

I pulled up the Google site, called up Utube and typed in "Honda motorcycles Bonneville" and the site was on the first page.

Enjoy.. The dude who did it did.

Some of the old time stuff from the salt flats is interesting. The flats are or were also used for endurance/speed records sometimes a great as 1000 miles. One film shot in 1932 shows the PennsOil Pierce Arrow with Ab Jenkins at the wheel. Guessing the engine was out of a Packard. A 462 cu,in flathead V8. Shown are averages speeds over a given distance. Lots of night stuff and great filming and editing.

If the Packard engine is the same one I am thinking.. This is one big engine and pretty including porcelain coated manifolds and heads and a clockwork device that in the Packards would open and close "blinds" in front of the radiator.

Nothin like a good speed wobble at 140 eh? Better than a Starbucks Soy Latte or a bigass can of Red Bull eh?

I had to have a steering damper for the TM, but I had it dialed down to almost nothing. Seriously doubt the VFR would exhibit any wobble w/o one. I was approaching 150 when I let off for braking, should have held her a bit longer (speedo calibrated and matched vid of trap speed).

I also considered Bonneville, but as my VFR is my do everything girl, I did not want to have to tear her down after salt flat runs to clean, so settled on the 'mile' event instead. Also, you can spend a butt-load of time/money prepping for a Bonneville run, and that will be the year that the conditions are crap ... just a thought.

Better yet how about a speed wobble at 135mph in the middle of a sweeper? Did that about four weeks on the way back from Dubois WY on my trip. Should of reset the suspension before wandering out w/o luggage. The bike is stable up to 165 mph going straight I can attest. It gets there real quick too.

Yep, that would tend to wake anybody up.. Had a couple on dirt ovals.. not that fast though. Timkin bearings fixed that on the Gold Star.

Ran the lakes in cars near Willow and Edwards AFB including being the "test pilot" for a "community" project built on the same lines as an iceboat. Surplus on USAF bases turns up some great parts and farkles.

Never did Bonneville. Been there twice.. Just looking.. If you have the chance, go sometime. It's the last bastion of hot rodding although the "miles" sound like they come real close..
