    Hey,

So, I have a 98 VFR. I love it and can't imagine getting rid of it, but... I found a new 14 for just under 9 grand. I'm not in a place where I can justify (convince my wife it's a good thing to) owning two bikes. So I ask you owners of the 8th gen and preferably those who've owned a 5th gen if you would get rid of the 5th gen for an 8th gen and what you would consider a good deal on a bike the dealer probably wants to get rid of. Thanks in advance.

Even though I still had my 83 VF750, it was back in NY. After I retired, I bought a 2003 VFR in 2013 after moving to CA. In Dec 14, I traded in the 03 on a slightly used 2014. In the summer of 2015, I restored the 83 after it had been sitting for nearly 25 years. I was on my own, I didn't have to justify it to anyone but myself. But your a younger family and you need to discuss it with her. No one needs 2 bikes, especially if you have other priorities, but if you have means and consider the 5th gen an investment that you are willing sell in the future, she may surprise you.

In another ten years people will still be reminiscing about the fifth gens. The 2014 will just be another vanilla model year that time forgot. Just sayin'

I've had a 5th, 6th, and now an 8th gen. I would have an 8th gen. over a 5th gen. any day if I were you. No way to tell you what a good deal is since nobody but you knows the condition of your 5th gen. Another option is to ditch the wife ; ) Everybody needs more than one bike.

Yeah I think I'm gonna stick with the 5th gen. It would be nice to have a new bike, but I worked hard to get rid of all my debt and don't want another payment. Plus having a payment would make it more difficult to build it and stock is boring. So 5th gen stays. Thanks for the replies!

I get that. I know the 8th Gen above that I linked is a hell of a value, but I like the one payment plan.

I just looked on their site again and they have two NC700X adv bikes for $4788 brand new. That's scooter pricing!

But, it is the NC700. It would be a good commuter mule.

I own the 5th, and have test ridden the 8th (dealer ride day). The 8th is very pretty, but I did not find a night and day difference. The clutch and gearbox felt newer/tighter but since I replaced my clutch plates I'd call that a draw. I did not notice any significant difference in performance (my 5th has 90,000km). The modified suspension on my 5th is better (IMO) than the 8th, so for me this one is a no-brainer.

If you want to own two bikes, that is a different story (but I still wouldn't get an 8th if I also owner a 5th). I can heartily recommend a VTR1000F Superhawk for cheap fun and a very different riding experience to the VFR.

Yeah that's a screamin deal but I'm in Washington so the trip would make up the difference. That one would be hard to pass up if it were closer

I wouldn't wish that bike on anyone. Imagine a vfr800 with a rev limiter at 6500. No thanks.

You're smart, sticking with the 5th gen with gear driven cams and the like, win win for the money the 5th is a great bike. Now had you been coming in from not having a VFR, the 8th ain't bad way to go, but the thing is, the 5th gen is the 8th biggest rival.

And, to me, the 5th gen was used for styling cues as well.

Went for a ride on the weekend with a mate on his NC750X ( manual ) , he is returning to motorcycling after a 12 year break and it seems a sensible choice, enough torque for easy riding up a mountain range, friendly as a puppy handling and usefully sized storage bin for his wets, drink bottle and odds with sods.

I have considered that bike. I have a practical streak that my BMW runs counter to.
