What Keeps Feeding Electrical Gremlins?

    The screw is seized in there.

    We use the right bit back in South Dakota. It's just not budging.

    I would drill the head off and use vice grips to unscrew the Shank.

    But there is no way a drill is fitting up under there.

    Try the penetrating oil and let it work. Gentle heat sometimes works the bolt or screw being of different metals than what the screw or bolt is securing. Impact drivers are fine but there's a chance of breaking the whole mechanism. As a last resort a machine shop may be your best bet. If you need to go that route bring the new hardware with you. A dealer might be able to do the job but unless you know they can they might screw it up more and charge you anyway.

    Whoops..I was thinking master cylinders not electrical. All those damned OEM screws seem to be soft.. Been there replaced them all on mine. No problems ever since.

    Not sure if you have one or not AM, but if you have a dremmel tool (rotary tool) you might be able to carefully cut a slot in the end of the screw. Then you may be able to use a flathead screwdriver to remove the screw, and then replace it with a new one as BB suggests. I had to remove a stuck screw on the start switch on my wife's '81 CB400T and it worked like a charm.

    You should be able to loosen the cable to help get it out of the way a little bit and get a better angle with the drill bit.

    I know it's not an easy location, but it should be doable. When I looked at it last time that's exactly how I was going to attack it.

    AM,

    Ive just read this & I had the similar problems - until I replaced the battery...

    I have a volt meter & the charging system works perfectly, had lots of volts but not enough amps - Yuasha ytx-12s so correct battery.


    Have you had your battery load tested or tried another known good battery for a couple of days >?

    The dash resets due to the starter taking all the power & the theshold for the clocks dropping causing them to reset - It did exactly the same EVEN when fully charged. This also causes the hicup i think by the dash reseting so turning off the injectors.

    She just put this battery in over the summer. I made and installed her a wiring harness and it's propped up her charging voltage significantly. I also rode her bike when it was failing .... I'm pretty sure she has a short in her sub-harness under the front fairing, though the issues are far less severe and significant since I did a bunch of work to it (cleaned all the ground, checked all connectors, installed one of my wiring harnesses, etc.).

    This is true ... but the issue is intermittent, not consistent.

    Mine was inconsistant. Some weeks it didnt happen at all, others it happened nearly every ride - thats why I fitted the voltmeter to the bike. Zero issues since battery replacement.

    If AM can borrow a known good batt for a week or so you may find her issues go away.

    Thanks for sharing this... the exact same thing is happening. I'll go a long while with nothing wrong, then all of a sudden it will happen out of the blue. Then back to normal for a while, then acting up. No rhyme or reason.

    I have not had the Yuasa battery I got this summer load tested. I have not swapped it out for a known good battery either.

    Interesting you had the same issue, but remedied with new battery. Something to think about and try.

    The electrical problem may lie in the switch that is giving you big problemos.

    Cuttin a slot in that screw head with a Dremel tool may do the trick. The cutting wheels are straight. Slot type screwdrivers are tapered. Get as close a match as possible. Bit drivers are great for many purposes but so is a bigass screwdriver when dealing with stubborn screws on a motorcycle.

    The other type are best handled with TLC. ;)

    Dremelling a flathead slot is a good idea. Once done try using a long flathead screwdriver and a hammer and tap away chisel like counter clockwise to see if it can impact release the seizure. Learned that trick removing a broken header bolt.
