Don't forget the Loctite when you put that new screw in (said no one ever).

    Great effort AM.

Keep that screw as a trophy and reminder to endeavor to persevere.

Maybe Loctite (red) was used on that screw and caused all the problems--but dremel + bigass screwdriver for the win...! Now you can clean those switch contacts and kill the gremlins.

i would recommend to buy 2 replacement screws, then screw one in without loctite and put the other in your toolbag. If it backs out and comes loose or you lose the first one, then you have the backup and can try some blue loctite. The red requires fairly high heating to loosen the screw; blue can be loosened with heavy duty tools and sufficient torque, but can still inflict damage if you're not expecting it.

Speaking of screws IMO while they are out, go get your hands on some button head or socket head (allen type) stainless screws, then there will never be a worry.

Yeah, thats the kind of part that once I get it out I take a hammer and crush it as an example to any other screw, nut or bolt thinking about refusing to release.

Is that a lock washer on the old bolt? Was there one on the other bolt?

Read up on Loctite before you start using products that started with one name when over time have multiplied into product lines and retained the original name. case in point, "Bondo" and yep,Harley-Davidson too.

    http://www.loctite.com/index2.php?cc=us

Great stuff. One of the mistakes made with products like this is over using it. The greater the contact area the greater the adhesion.

The above is possibly why The Donald does what he do..

I wasn't serious about using Loctite on those bolts! Brylcreem sounds like a better idea!!!

I think that Brylcreem was the original greasy kid stuff. Maybe a mix of Loctite and Brylcreem would improve The Donalds hair..

Now I'm wondering if "The Trump" will supercede "The Mullet"..

Yes, BB, that is a lock washer. The other bolt had one too.

Great idea about having an extra, kennybobby. I have extra fairing bolts and what not, but none of these.

Yes, RVFR, I grabbed some Allen type stainless steel from ACE. I'll go grab more to have extra.

Expvet, I didn't think about a hammer. Could sledge it to smithereens too. But think I'll tuck it away. Like the oil slick pic I look at to remind me to keep on.

Talking about keeping on, I'm concerned about what kind of damage is going to be in there. I couldn't continue working on it yesterday. Had to get to other activities.

If the threading is damaged, is there any way to fix that other than getting a new assembly?

I can't remember what material the screw goes into ... plastic or metal? You could try re-tapping it, first with the same sized thread, if not, a slightly larger one and a new bolt.

If it's plastic, fill the hole with JB Weld, drill, and tap it.

Jeff, you got it, only problem is they are a fine thread and not many people would have a tap this size. You could probably drill right through it and tap the newly drilled section, and if there wasn't enough material you could put a dome nut on top to dress it up. More than one way to skin a cat.

Check the drawing on your switch to see if a lock washer was part of the original assembly. Sometimes just the elements cause dissimilar metals to react in adverse ways. This may have added to the reluctance of that bolt to come loose.

If you have the new stainless bolts from a hardware bin and lock washers (if OEM on your bike) Checking the condition of the female threads is easy providing they are the right bolts.. Stainless steel is hard stuff and a SS bolt will fit or can be used as a chaser to clean up the female threads. If redrilling and tapping is necessary, read up on how to do it. There are techniques involved that are easy but should be employed.

Lots of work for sure..Look at it this way. A shop would want to just replace the entire switch and charge you some big pesos for labor. Also you made some of the dudes here feel like knights in shiny amour... ;)

    Norm,

We call em "acorn nuts" in the states.

I think if you have some really great ways to skin cats you should share with SOW.

Drawing shows and states screw and washer, not specifically a lock washer.

Not sure why PO had it on the screws or if it was OEM.

I do have new stainless steel screws though and can replace with new washers.

I couldn't agree with you more about the positives of work like this. Frustrating, but satisfying when it gets figured because of work done yourself, saving money, and learning a thing or two.

I couldn't do it all though without all my Knights, so thank you!
I do hope muh Knights feel Knightly! :) <3

    Happy screwing awaits.
    Got the stuff guys! ;)

But not before my eyes being accosted by a horrendous display and me gasping at the sight of it.

They guys at auto store laffed. They've know about my moto trips and sagas and whatnots. At least it wasn't an oil filter display.

Really tho...cleaning up switch assembly. Anti-seize on threads.
Hope this helps the starting issues I've had.

If not, I'll see about my battery being a potential issue.

AM, I'm a little concerned as to why you want thread locker, be careful where you use it

Humoring Terry and his brilliant (sarcastic) suggestion of Loctite. :)

    I really picked up anti-seize. :)
