Put 105 miles on the NEW VFR today, noticed a strange noise though

Brief background summary..... Bought the bike yesterday, 2014 with Zero miles. I rode it home yesterday and since I was 40 miles from the dealer I started the first part of the trip on the service road and side streets. Not knowing how much break in was required on the Honda engines I took it easy on the side streets taking it through the gears up to around 6-7k and then lettting off the throttle and draw a vacuum on the cylinders in hopes to aid in proper seating of the rings. I could only do this for about 8-10 miles or so until it was on the highway.

Rode the rest of the way home about 60-75 changing between 4th-6th frequently and no more than 1/2-3/4 throttle. I put 40 miles on it by the time i pulled in the driveway, parked and admired it for a while.

Today I hopped on and put about 105 miles on her and say 8k a couple times under moderate throttle, all was well and rode great. I wear a helmet so I could not notice the noise until I made it home. When I got home I parked it went in and ate dinner with the family, I came out about half an hour later and went to move it into the shop. I had no helmet on and I fired her up, coolant temp was still about 160. I blipped the throttle a couple of times and pulled her in the shop.

What caught my attention was when I blipped to 4-5K, upon the deceleration of rpms I heard a tinny sounding thunk. It sounds like its in the exhaust somewhere. I did it a few more times and it did it every time.

Any thought on what it would be making the noise, whatever it is it resonates out towards the exhaust. The best way I could describe would be a small hammer dropped from about 4" on to a piece of 1/4" plate steel. So it has me a little worried, It appears the bike has a catalytic converter so I wonder if something in there or a valve could be the culprit.

Other than that I noticed no weird performance today when I was out and about.

    TIA

ETA: DO THE 8TH GENS HAVE A FLAPPER IN THE INTAKE, COULD IT BE THIS VALVE CLOSING UPON DECELERATION OF RPM'S?

Congrats on the new VFR. Wow, sorry, no help, can't say I've heard that one. This will be interesting to see what others say about this. as far as the flapper goes, I can't hear mine open and close, even if i could, I doubt it would have a sound like you describe.

Hmmm...your Honda has a defect in the first 105 miles already? Are you sure you didn't accidentally buy a Ducati SuperSport? They look just like the VFR :witless:

Seriously though, I have no idea what it is - hope it's nothing major. Did you check to make sure the exhaust connections are all tight?

Best bet is to record the sound and post the file up. Most likely it's the flapper valve that you're hearing. A quick test would be to pull the vacuum hose off the flapper actuator and plug the hose. I used a small screw, inserted it into the hose and zipped tied it. Run the bike like you did when it made the noise, if the noise is still there, then probably not the flapper.

Having nothing better to do, went out and warmed up the beast. I blipped the throttle as you did from a steady 4k to 5k, from idle to 5k, as many times as i thought the neighbors could bear, and I heard a "tink', but not every time, not real loud.

So I went back out again, warmed bike up and repeated. Only heard it on the second blip and not the other 5. Earlier it wouldn't stop.

All connections on the exhaust are tight, nothing loose. I'll keep an eye on it and when I let the dealer do the 600 mile service I will ask them about it.

I'll try to get a clip tomorrow.

It's nothing to worry about. I bought a new 2014 with 0 miles last summer, and mine did exactly that same thing for a few hundred miles or a few weeks, I can't remember. It goes away. The dealer found nothing wrong at the 600 mile service.
    Enjoy your new VFR!

Wonder if it's just the Flapper opening and closing, think it comes in and out around 4-5K, when I had my 6th Gen in early '04 it used to make a loud POP under the tank for the first few hundred Kms when rolling the throttle on and off..

    Thanks for the replies gents.

I found this video on youtube and the tink noise I hear can be heard in this video. Mine is probably louder since I have stock exhaust (for now). You can hear it real well around 10 seconds. Guess its the nature of the beast.

After reading your initial post, I was suspecting that you were just hearing backfires, but because you described it as a "tink", I figured I'd wait for more info before I chimed in...that is exactly what you hear in that video...backfires. Totally normal, they all do it. You have nothing to worry about.

Whoa, I bet these bikes would sound like a monster with the cat removed. I was thinking backfires but didn't think that would be the case. Maybe the ECU is still learning so maybe they are more pronounced. Thanks everyone

I have about 90 miles on my bike, I break them in like I plan to run them, all my cars and bikes. I avoid red lining and any constant rpm , and I have never had an oil burner or engine failure in all my history. Just do an initial oil change at 600 miles.

OK, I was about to take my muffler off yesterday for my new one I was able to hear I think what you heard, a TINK TINK on throttle off comming from muffler, I have 120 miles on bike, sounds like the muffler breaking in to me.

I'm certain it was backfires I was hearing. I have since replaced the stock muffler with a Delkevic DS70 and left the baffle installed. Sounds much better now, It was just too quiet for my taste.
Just rolled over 500 miles, will be taking to the dealer for the first service, after that dealer service I will do the rest and move to Amsoil.

It could have been the cat eating the back fire on throttle off, and I agree about being too quiet, with my helmet on and shield down I can't even hear it running. But I'm going to the 13" delkevic tri oval since I do a 600 mile run to CO from TX in one day in July, I just need more sound not too much. We leave at 4 am and make Amarillo by lunch and try and get to cooler climates before TX 100+ temps eat us alive.

    I picked up the 13" tri rckzrzy1.

It's too damn quiet. even baffle out. Much like the stock exhaust, baffle in, it's a sewing machine. baffle out, you can hear the teensiest touch of VFR-ness in the engine, but the intake noise is louder, especially at vtec engagement.

I'm seriously miffed about my purchase. all is not lost however. :tranquillity:

I'm gonna drill out the rivets, turn this muffler into a pretend-muffler, and re-rivet it. Because open header is grand, and the only thing stopping me from doing that, was centerstand interference with the chain.

You bought the exact same delkevic 13" SS tri oval and think that with baffle out it's almost stock? I think you may be tone deaf or already lost your hearing , and I'm not being sarcastic. I will grab my DB meter this afternoon and measure it. I know sounds are very personal but with baffle out it's basically just a straight pipe. I rode about 250 miles yesterday and really like the pipe, when I slowed for towns it was polite enough to not offend but once you get some rpm it livens up and no doubt when the vtec opens the other valves.

But again to each his own . Maybe age has an effect on sound , tomorrow I turn 54 . Maybe you
Should try that 8" mini pipe with larger opening ?

I honestly don't think you have a issue, is it more of a backfire type noise? if so quite normal mine has made popping banging noises since new and even louder now that I have gotten rid of the original exhaust and have put it down to the pair valve system??!!
