Have done some looking but unable to locate.

What are the MAJOR differences between the 1990-1993

    AND

    the 1994-1997 models.

I realise the bodywork is completely different but interested in

weights (full tank of fuel not manufacture's claims)

Engine power characteristics--bore and stroke, claimed power .

    Maintenance issues.

    General likes and dislikes.

    Personal experiences etc.

    Please give me input.

    Thank you

    Let's see:

Swingarm is longer in 3rd gen.
Rear wheel went from 5.5" wide to 5" wide.
Front wheel picked up floating disks.
Carbs are slightly smaller in 4th gen.
8 spoke rear versus 5 spoke.
    Turn signals get tucked in.
And I understand a bunch of other small stuff. Don't know them all.
They were trying to make it lighter, more user friendly.

    Meh.

Theres a lot of little things, not sure of all of them 4th gens were drawn up to be a bit more sporty, mimicking Nr750. You can see most googling the two.

Third gen has the 5.5 inch 8 spoke rear wheel that everyone is obsessed over, vs the 4th gens lighter 5.0 inch with the 5 round spokes. Third gen has 36mm carbs vs the 4th gen's 34mm carbs (done for more low and mid range throttle response). The third gen has a big bulky box header collector vs the 4th gen's lighter simpler header. I think the 4th gen omitted some stand equipment to drop some pounds over the third gen, like maybe the center stand? But, overall I believe it is the same engine and frame so a lot of stuff transfers over.

This is one of those google things , or go find one to look at, different frame, yes the 4th gen is a bit lighter, has better throttle response. Handled and stopped a little bit better. But those last ones where also rider ability too. A tad more Hps, again depending on where you're at, here in the PNW I saw from the dyno 99hp out of mine.

Agreed that Google search and Wikipedia could provide most of the "hard" numbers but was also hopeful that owners might chime in to provide "personal" opinions. A BIG BONUS would have been if comments could be relayed by an owner who had experienced BOTH models.

Guess I'm looking for "guidance" or "suggestions" from the SOURCE (the forum members) who can provide the most accurate information.

There are Very Few of either model for sale in this region--according to craigs list searches so locating an example for comparison purposes is just not practical.

To ALL those that were kind enough to comment and offer opinions and input--THANK YOU.

    Best to all

    Rick

    Hey Rick,

I chose the 3rd gen because it was a bit LESS sporty. It still has all the grunt and REALLY likes the redline. Maybe the 4th is a bit snappier in the low- and mid-range. I don't care. I love to wind it up, but there is absolutely no need to. The comfort may be a bit better as the 3rd gen has a bit more upright position. I use this website whenever I research bikes that might fit me http://cycle-ergo.com/ . Yes, the exhaust collector is heavy and bulky, but it allows room for the centrestand, which the 4th gen does not.

    Cheers,
    Glenn

What might be cool are lists of things that didn't change. Then folks could work backward or forward.

Really? So, is it only the aftermarket header that is incompatible with the centrestand?

    Thanks,
    Glenn

In my opinion they cheaped out on the 4th generation giving you less, look at the aluminum frame on the bikes from 90-93 then look at the 94-97 years. No cool ducting built into the frame like on gen3 bikes, they chose to use the plastic side panels to give the illusion of ducting. I know the speed drive is different on the gen4 bikes, I was not aware that honda went to a 5 inch rear wheel, that sucks imho. Nice thing about gen3 bikes, and maybe the gen4 (for all I know) is that they use current tyres available for the crop of 600cc bikes floating around.

I stumbled onto the VFR years ago, I totaled a bike and needed a new one, I was not in love with the bike at the time, all I knew was that it had gear drive cams and was a 750. Flash forward 20+ years and I still have that same bike and bought another one along the way. Tastes don't really change :peace:

I'd rather have the engine improvements on the G4 over the fancy frame ducts. :eagerness::eagerness:

Apart from smaller carbs and less bulky header, what were the engine improvements? I thought they were the same basic long block.
