Understood. I am just a messenger here. I sell tools and know how to write tickets. I have looked directly at the sun during a partial solar eclipse several decades ago as a child and I don't know if there was any damage to my eye or not because of it. I have some optical issues but so does everyone else my age. It is just that these days, I am older and wiser and will tend to listen to scientists and doctors who are far more educated in many matters than I. What I have learned though is that to take two lesser welding lenses, add the two together, does not add up to a specific higher number. This I learned from the welding experts of our company. No personal knowledge.

    I was Total'd !!!

Left Calgary around noon on Aug20 for the Idaho Desert.
Smokey for the drive south on I15.
Got to my spot in the desert just after midnight.

    Slept in the Chateau Chrysler.
Was no one there, cept for this guy with his dogs in an RV.
    Quiet night.

Then in the morning, there was, Eggs/Bacon & Coffee.

    Then,,.. there was,,.. Everybody!,,..
Kids playing Frisbee, "older" kids flying Drones around,,..
Music players with Space/Moon/Sun related tunes,,..
Was looking like the early start of a Grateful Dead Concert.

Not sposed to be off the Hiway,,.. probably where the Alien bodies are buried.

This DOE Security guy was talking to various Eclipse Chasers,,..
Probably doesn't want Tourists digging up Radio-Active waste as Souvenirs.

Lighting gets Weird as Totality approaches.

    The Prize.

A Orange Ring ran around the horizon from the Forest Fire Smoke.

    Then back to "normal'.

Police rerouted traffic away from I15 since it was jammed up.

Bugs won't get outa the way fast enough at the posted 80mph.
That's just from the last gas fill.

It was stunning, and worth the $165cdn in gas and 2190km round trip in 2 days.
People were great, next to me was a family from France, rented a car from Texas.
I setup the 4K camera to point West and Time Lapse'd the Eclipse coming/going.
Turned out very cool,,.. now to just figure out how to cut it down to 30 seconds.
I used 2x #10 welding glass, stacked. And a #12 at Bailey's Beads, then Total Nakedness.
Old school, like we used to do in the 60's & 70's (Dad was a Welder).

Fortunately others on the team had extra glasses to go around. A couple glances with #9 at 95+% and it was obvious that it wouldn't be enough to look for long. I shut the shop down for a long lunch and we had a pot luck. Some folks had their families come in and enjoyed it with us. Was a great day. Except for the traffic trying to get through town in the morning and afternoon to get closer to totality. I saw people doing 50 in a 30 through town, whole lines of cars refusing to obey a traffic light, and my wife's coworker got t-boned. People are so dumb in groups.

Every year now for several years there has been a group of motorcycle guys who act like children in and about the Atascadero area. Basterds!

Awesome write up and pics/vid! I agree it was worth the drive - in my case it was over 900 miles round trip from Orlando to Columbia with a stopoff at hotel in Augusta GA the night before. Here's my eclipse vid - totality hits around the 3;45 mark!
