so I've looked through the search and the 8th gen forum and came up with few results ("oil" is too short of a word to search)

the topic has been touched on in other threads but it seems worth having its own conversation.

share your experiences with oils, oil filters, your preferences, and your most hated.

I'm coming up to the first oil change just went to the honda dealership and found out they had an oil change kit (oil, filter, and washers together).

was going to measure the washers and buy a bunch from an automotive shop, then look for filter alternatives and see what oils are available

the K&N filters seem to be either really good or really bad, depending on who you talk to

Best use The OE filter you can also buy it with a filter key to use for the next service. Part no available on here or from a dealer. Costs a few dollars more.

You can use OE oil, most folk use aftermarket oil.

Seem to be numerous K&N oil filter failures in the US. Have only heard of 1 in the UK.

I use: A Honda OEM filter and a new crush washer everytime. I use an OEM filter so I can forget about filter problems. Some people use other filters and oils for what I think are anecdotal reasons just like mine are.

I use Amsoil 10w-40 because, for me, it makes the bike shift noticeably better than Mobil 1 which would be my second choice. I don't like Amsoil's MLM but it works well for very hard riding use and it's a good quality oil. Synthetic oils are PROVEN to be better oils than Dino's and that's all I use in my bikes and cars. 10W-30 is what Honda recommends for my bike but they changed the spec. for mileage reasons. Nothing else changed in the engine concerning tolerances so I chose not to follow their recommendation considering the heat where I live and ridiculous government mandates forcing vehicle manufacturers to make unwise compromises.

I change the oil and filter every 4000 miles just because I want to and think that's long enough for hard use. Honda or nobody else cares how long my bike lasts so I'll do what I want there.

Oil threads invariably bring up different opinions and sometimes arguments but I don't care. It's my bike and I've never had an oil or filter related problem. FWIW.

I also use amsoil 10W-30, and I also use their filters. I change oil once a year regardless of mileage. Used the same on my 92 ST1100 which was just sold...that worked for 24 years. I'm 64 now, so I'm not sure I will be riding this bike for 24 years. Lol

Being too lazy to ride to the nearest dealership for a stupid filter I ordered a Honda filter on-line from Bike Bandit. And behold! There was an official Honda filter wrench included in a kit. For 20 years I've been struggling with my auto store filter wrench that never works. The new bona-fide Honda wrench actually grabs the filter and lets me unscrew it. No more channel-lock massacres! This last oil change was a pleasure.
And yes, I use full synthetic motorcycle oil from the auto parts store. My VFR is liquid-cooled and any good oil will be just fine. (I base this on the color of the oil I drain out at 5000 mile intervals.)
    Good luck with your efforts!

I like Honda oil and filters. GN4 is good stuff.

However, as long as the oil is JASO-MA certified, and is the correct weight, it's good enough!

I assume you're getting the proper type of crush washers, since you said automotive shop?

And definitely stay away from the K&N filter. A number of near-accidents in this forum alone, from failures. I had 2 fail before I quit using them.

@John O -- What does a Honda oil filter wrench look like?

Looks like the one I bought at Orielly auto parts. Pennzoil brand, the smallest one and fit perfectly for $5.99. The only other thing that I would add is that you might want to fill the filter up with oil as much as you can prior to install if you haven't in the past. I did not do this before this bike and read about the wear that the engine takes due to the oil having to be pumped into the filter and then into the engine. If the filter is full or close = less wear. I believe that I got this from some here on VFR world. Thanks to that someone that I failed to remember saying this. ;-)

The engine parts will already have a liberal coating of oil so there is no need to prefill filter. For the few seconds it takes for the filter to fill there will be no damage done. It's also a lot less messy to install as is.

I think that the info was given and passed on as another bit of protection. It cant hurt, but noted as messy if full. I filled mine up 3/4 of the way due to the 8th gens spacing issues with the radiator and bracket. It did not spill out. I also let the bike drain for 5 days (being so pissed off at my first attempt in conditions that I should not have started the change- no filter wrench- unknown rubber gasket- spacing and lack of tools that where at work) so I had to put some in to coat and then filled the filter as I said above. Safety first!;-) But good to know that not needed. Thanks Fink.

On the flip-side, I would advise to pre-fill the filter. It prevents an air pocket forming. I've seen it bad enough on some bikes where you have to burp the filter if you get one. Pre-filling negates me even having to worry about that.

How would you keep the oil in the filter if you need to put it in horizontally?

Impossible to get filter into place with oil in it on the 8th gens, less space than on the 6th gens.

Not true. I did it twice in one day. =)

The fibers in the filter hold in the oil. Fill it to the top once, it will soak in and be ~1/2 full. That's when I spin it on. It isn't like turning a glass of water sideways.

if the engine had NO oil inside ,as in after a re build ,adding oil to the filter before installing would be a good idea, but a simple oil change, just replace the filter & upon first startup let the engine idle for about a minute for proper circulation. a motor with no load at idle speed can operate long enough for oil pressure to build . i like using o.e. filters & hp4. changed every 2-3000 miles .

Sorry for the delayed reply. The Honda filter wrench has more precisely stamped facets for a snug it. You may even need to tap it gently to get it on. It also has a hex nut for you to drive, instead of a square hole. Better tools, even on simple items, really make a difference.
