Hey all, GG Jr. just got accepted to the University of Florida :D I told him I'd buy him a scooter for his high school graduation present to help him get around campus cuz it's really huge. When we visited the campus it seemed that the scooter was the ideal way to get around with lots of motorcycle/scooter parking all over campus - in fact there were so many scooters it almost felt like Taiwan - LOL

Anyways, I'd like to know what you guys think would be the best choice out of the above. Ultimately I'll let GG Jr. choose but I'd like to know what to steer him towards. He doesn't have a motorcycle license (his mother has forbidden it) so it has to be a max of 50cc under Fla law (although I will still make him take the 2 day training course anyway which they let you do on a scooter). I really liked my old Honda PCX 150 but I've got no experience with the 50cc market. I'd prefer to go with a Honda or Yamaha but I'm open to other ideas - thanks!

The whole point of a moped is to chill & look cool.
It's not to try and do traffic light gran prixs or get your knee down, or stoppies in the parking lot.
Hence a Vespa because sometimes you don't have to try too hard to be cool.

    FYI I don't like scooters.

Thanks guys, I just checked my local Honda dealer that also carries Piaggio and Vespa scooters and they have the following models in stock:

    Piaggio Fly 50
    Vespa Sprint 50
    Vespa Primavera 50

They also have an Aprilia SR Motard 50. So that makes 8 different 50cc models to choose from.

Should try to get some lettering "Turbo" or "Supercharged' Double overhead cams fuel injected and fully blown with an 850 Holley double pumper, with bolt on nitrous kit. No that would be a scooter to have!

Yeah, as long as he looks like Audrey Hepburn. Or wants to pick up guys like Audrey Hepburn would.

    I mean, a Vespa, really?

LOL - good point but you have that a bit backwards - it was actually Gregory Peck who used his Vespa to pick up Audrey Hepburn and give her a tour of Rome - she liked it so much she took off with it :D

Apparently the scooter used in the movie still runs and sold for $197k at auction last year:

Can’t understand your wife’s reasoning re bike. You can still do the same damage on a scooter.

    It's simple physics:
Hit something at 30-40, good chance you will live.. & with the gear we now have maybe even uninjured.
Hit it at 60 - you are into a world of pain.

That's why 'something' like a Vespa will get him the skills required without him feeling that he has to ride it like a dick before he kills himself.
The vespa is an 'easier' sell to the wife - Who I suspect would prefer you just buy him a V8 pickup!!

Pete you need to remember he lives in the US and not UK and most scooterists over here do not wear safety equipment, except what is required to by law. Add to that some sunshine and heat you end up with shorts n tee shirts.

So your statement doesn’t really apply.

No way! An orange Vespa on the UF campus would be the ultimate chick magnet - I would have killed for one back in the day! :D

Fink is correct - the kids ride the scooters with no gear whatsoever - here's some pics I took from our campus visit (the only rider wearing a helmet is on a Ninja 300).
