    This is posted due to many having trouble finding this post. The post is imbedded in another thread so the search engine is not good at pulling up "The Drill" Hopefully one of the moderators will make this a sticky.

    Many thanks go out to the original poster of this drill here, mello dude. He was the one who found and posted this in the earlier thread.

    I had originally copied and pasted mello dude's drill here for quick reference. However, the original thread is a living thread with updates that need to be seen rather than to just rely on what I copied here. So for you to get the best info available, I have deleted what I had pasted here earlier and am just directing you to the above original thread.

    Thanks MD. Your finding of this drill was very much a good thing. I just thought it needed its own platform and you deserved the credit. All I did was cut and paste.

    Just for the halibut........ It's a silly ass story but here's how it came about....

    I have been screwing with bikes and cars for whole lotta years, always been a wrench'n geek foole..... and before the drill, one day with a good beer buzz on, I just got annoyed at all the confusing try this and that, ping and pong round and round stuff that didnt really give a step by step directions on a charging debug. So I decided to set out to write a stupid simple, step by step and the procedure was born.
    A few weeks later, one on my neighbor bike guys, stops by and says, "hey what's that drill you do to check your charging system" DOH! "The Drill"?...... Wasnt gonna name it, but I got smacked in the face.

    Just a re-post of this very valuable thread which was originated by mello dude and posted by myself. The subject came up the other day on chat and seems this thread was hard to find.

    Maybe one of the moderators can make this a sticky, whatever that does for it.

    saved it to my bookmarks just in case I cannot find it again and hopefully I will not need it but thanks for posting again it is very good and easily understood, even by me and I am getting thicker the older I get !

    Goin through The Drill....
    Had to clean the alternator r/r connector and things seem to be better. But wondering if my earlier hard start and dead battery problems were a sign of the beginning of the end of my stator. Resistance is 0.5 ohms across all 3 yellow wires. Very consistent and smack dab in the middle of the service manual specs. Battery is showing 13.6V DC at the 5k RPM normal operating temp w/brites on. So it's charging too. Nothing looks fried. Right now I can afford the time and $ to replace. Later in summer not so much. Need this baby b/c she is my daily driver. I can't WFH a lot (which means I ride more :) What are the latest on replacements? Would you go for it? I see the trend. Don't want to be a statistic.

    Those were the symptoms I experienced both times my stator failed. Jump starting the bike became frequent and batter did not seem to hold a charge, even a brand new battery.

    Everything is running great. I did well with the original stator getting somewhere around 85K miles out of it. But when that went, I was out far from home on a trip and OEM stators were back ordered and I went with an after market. That one lasted just two years when it fried once again far from home on a trip. Now I am back with OEM and it is holding up quite well. The bike has somewhere around 136k miles on it now without doing the math.

    Sounds like babied the original stator along? Constant vigilance with a bit of a risk about where you will be when it fails. My connector shield allowed chip seal bits and all sorts of shtuff inside, not great for conduction. If a good cleanout does not resolve it, I will order new parts. Summer runs hot here in N. Cal. in east SF Bay. A cooler machine is a must. Speaking of which, need to jump over to cooling! Thanks again for sticky thread.

    The connector from the stator is a known shortfall of the 6th gen and it is widely recommended to eliminate the connector and solder the wires together. Having said that, I still have not.

    I was interested in Jeff B's beefed wiring. Looks like something worthwhile. Thanks for sharing. I am having other electrical issues with signals and brake light too. Never fun to be stranded. I know the solution to at least one of the problems... thanks much!
