Mounted a set of Michelin Road 5 tires on my 6 Gen wheels. Probably not going to put them on until I get the new brake pads, which are on their way...

Will do. I was going to order these a couple of weeks ago but had an unexpected expense pop up. Ordered these a few days ago and got them yesterday. While I was at it I decided to replace the brake pads, so once those come in, I'll be doing the wheel swap and pad install. It is supposed to start raining here next week week but I hope to break in the tires and pads before it gets too wet.

From what I understand, these are based on the Pilot RS construction and tread pattern and so far I am very happy with those tires. I use them on the track, have about 8 track days on them so far and they feel really good. If the RS is any indication on how these will ride, I should be a very happy camper. Previous set I had was a Pilot Power 3 front and a Pilot Road 4 rear. With mostly commuter miles, I got 11,516 miles out of them. Although there is still quite a bit of tread front and rear, the front is starting to show some uneven wear and the rear squared off quite a bit, so changing them out now.

They were $348.35, so close to $350, depending on where you get them. Ridersdomain.com (formerly Jakewilson.com) has consistently the best prices on tires I've found, same company as Rocky Mountain ATV BTW. However, that being said, I got this set from Chaparral-racing.com, only paid a couple of bucks more but got them the next day. The price included CA sales tax and tire recycle fee too (whatever that is for). Since I mount my own tires, I'm saving at least $50 ($25 per tire at some places) so factor that into your cost. Most places will usually charge extra if bringing in tires bought elsewhere but seem to be more reasonable if buying from them.

Say what you will about the price but I found that mounting and balancing Michelins and Pirelli too for that matter, are some of the easiest to do. If these get anywhere near the mileage I got out of the last set of Michelins, the price is much easier to swallow. I always seem to have trouble with Dunlops for some reason though. I mounted Road 5s yesterday without a struggle and that was with cold rubber, something very hard to do with most tires! Balancing was easy as well, only had two 5 gram weights on the front and 3 on the rear, took less than a half our for both. I've had some tires that really want to pendulum and sometimes I have to re-break the bead and rotate the tire for it to finally get it to where I can actually balance it. One set of Pirellis didn't even require any weights! tire balanced as-is, not something I get very often.

I look forward to an update. I know this is your commuter bike, but I'm curious if the still overheat and get greasy as easily as the PR4. I'm looking forward to wearing it out and getting a T30EVO or a T31 on the back.

The only time the tires ever got greasy for me was when I got to or near the wear bars, other wise never had the issue. Once I scrub them in, I'll have to do a Malibu run and see how they work in the twisties.

Let me know when you're in the area. FYI Mulholland has been getting patrolled pretty heavily, especially the "Snake". There were four CHP up on top on Sunday.

For some reason, I've had the PR4 really get loose on me when they get hot. I've had them slide around a lot under throttle when leaned over exiting turns. Three or four times, I've had the back kick around and buck new pretty hard, other times, it's just been a controlled slide. Fun certainly, but it limits what I can do speed and throttle wise.

The T30EVO has never broken free on me. I'm waiting for a tire comparison! Wish I could just do it myself.

I try and never go on a Sunday. Sunday is “Zoo day”, it’s when everybody is out and about up there. If I go, I go early and I’m usually done by the time most riders are showing up, CHP too. A few times I had some of the roads almost to myself! The occasional local heading to the market or breakfast but usually they let me by.

To be quite honest, unless you ride the same bike with both sets of tires, you’re not going to get a apples to apples comparison. For one, we probably ride in a much different style and our bikes are not identical. Additionally, we probably have a good amount of weight difference (no offense meant), I’m just smaller/lighter than you, I’m just a wee Lad compared to you. The only common link would be the actual road we would be riding on.

I will say this though, the Pilot RS has an almost identical tread pattern, minus the sipes, and it grips really good at the track, but I also run lower tire pressures (32/28) versus the norm I run on the 6 Gen (36/42).

Thanks for the info. No offense taken. Luckily, having lost 60#, I'm a bit more wee myself. I think it's just I like to throttle a lot out of turns and I'm simply asking more of their sport touring tire than it's designed to give. Wrong tool for the job. Otherwise, I'm happy with it. I'm just able to ride harder with the T30.

Yea noBoost, good on you, you'll love those tires. Surprising too, is you should see decent millage out of them, 10k + is easy, even with track days.
