Soooo I stepped out of my apartment the other day (Greenville, SC) and my bike was gone. Like a shit magic trick, just a rain cover laid on the ground. Poof! No bike!
I spotted a young kid on a razor scooter nearby. He gave me a description of the fella who was "messing with it". He had a dog with him etc etc.. hit all the dingers for a POS bike thief. Cherry Darling (VFR) was hiding a few apt buildings away on her kickstand in the woods. Ignition gouged and handlebar lock broken. I assumed they would be back for it?
In hindsight, I should've left it in the woods and hid in the woods myself. After all, insurance will pay me for the bike.. only to be stolen again?

Any way, the bike is worth much more to me as I've been all over the country and bought it in high school, nearly 10 years ago. I wouldn't get my money back in racks and other comfort and touring oriented mods. Not to mention the windshield looks like a hippies nalgene - stickered up proper.

Having said all this, any recommendations for protecting the bike? Right now I have a Kryptonite New York U-lock through the front caliper and rims, I removed the battery, handlebar lock replaced, rain cover etc etc.. I suppose I should invest in a Kryptonite chain? Neeldess to say, my next living arrangement will have a garage...

I've been looking at Craigslist wondering what I'd use the insurance money on.. would ya"ll recommend 5th gens with 20,000 miles on them? That's a lot of time spent sitting, no?

Any chance of putting a light as a camera on it?

If they want it they will get it, and fuck it up as much as needed. Assholes. I don't know what you can do. Anything they do will leave you not wanting to have it back. I always have had the feeling that if it is stolen you do not want it back no matter the love of it. It will not be the same and cost you to much to bring it back because any device you add they will go threw or around and cause even more damage. "Let it go" as I say. But, like you said I might have left it there with video and called the police to do a sting on the thief and left the area. At least they may go to jail if the police actually responded quickly and give you possible wanted satisfaction on a asshole going to jail. As far as myself waiting for them NO, I would not want the recognition of my face for them. Not being a pussy, but they have friends and if they go to jail they know where you live and what you look like. They may already, but at least you are not connected with the arrest if that played out.

Sorry about it. Good luck with your decisions. The only thing like this for me was in my car and two times someone wanted my fucking stereo. Come on, it was only 300 buck new and it was always in a underground garage that I parked for work. Each time broken out glass, and fucked up the dash. It cost me over a $1,000 total. After the last attempt I put a sign on the dash when I parked and it said " Take the fucking car and leave the stereo in it! I need the insurance to cover my costs prick!" Not another issue.

    Been there
    Suggestions— get a garage
Had my FZR1000 nicked only after a month of ownership
Kryptonight on the rear, chained to a pole with the front.
Cops told me if they want it they will take it— took my cover to pricks

Shit I just looked up the value on Kelly Blue book for the 2014f and it is at $8,250 with 13,000 miles. I only have 5701 miles on it now. That is what my insurance will pay I owe $5600 and owe taxes. Can someone steal mine:) I can pay the taxes and buy another one afterward. Just kidding, but I would not have to put the taxes on a credit card. Hehehe.

Yeah, it's messed up when I find myself on Craigslist already planning how I'll use the insurance money... 6 more months on the lease and I'm done with apartments....

I'm not sure what to do. I ordered the tool to remove my givi racks. I'll probably just try to remove everything I won't get my money back for and ride it as usual... If it gets stolen, wait until I have a garage and find a decent VFR replacement on craigslist...

They should have an exploding bag system like the cash bags at banks. It shoots blue dye everywhere in their faces and almost impossible to get off. Bet that may stop them at that point! Put on one that is connected to your ignition and if the key is not used (having some direct wiring to the battery or a hidden 9vt backup system as well, so no matter the disconnected electrical point is broken it goes off on the handle bars or near the instrument panel. Also have one on or in baggage. When they disconnect without a key it sprays the hell out of them as well. Hell, put one under the seat so when they pop it to get to the battery and any electric device to protect it- goes off on them as well. It would be a cool system if feasible, but I am not a person knowledgeable about electrical systems. I know the key on the 2014 has a laser cut key and it may something that if they drive a screwdriver down - that if the last spindle was not engaged properly it may be possible to wire it to go off.

Your bike may be blue afterward, but a good wax job always may save some of the mess on the bodywork , maybe even someone design a bike cover that leaves only the seat uncovered so they can break it free, but covers everything else. Or Design a dye the only sticks to Organic material not plastic and metal alloy. It would be fun to walk around the neighborhood looking for blue men or women. I am sure the neighbors would see them as well. Hell ad aBlue tooth GPS locator on the bike so when the dye is deployed it alerts the police via you phone or home wireless. DAMN IM THINKING TO MUCH. This could be my retirement right here. So everyone forget about this idea and go back to whatever you where doing!;-)

Hummm a little to far for me! I Know people make mistakes or are in hard times, even just fucked up and/or chronic assholes that need to be in the system. I would rather they sit in jail for a bit than kill them outright and the community! He or she could have a son or daughter. But, you are enthusiastic with your response I will give you that!;-)

Maybe just a large cartoon boxing glove that knocks them clean out? Non-lethal and entertaining :)

With a battery powered grinder, they can grind through a chain or lock in seconds.

Electricution is another way of stopping someone - sadly offensive methods like this are not allowed in our 'but criminals have rights' agendas..

But the dye bag idea is interesting - especially if it is also linked to smartwater !
