After some research I have decided that
    A, I want a vfr
    B, I want geared cams,
    C, that points me atgen 5,s. 1998 to 01

But since vtecs seem easier to find, maybe an 06 or later.

    Make sense?

Add in some patience and understanding and you'll have your 5th Gen. It's even the right time of year for the necessary magic to occur.

    Here's what I've found:

Every springtime/early summer there are "old guys" who are finally facing up to the fact they're done riding. For various personal reasons these guys are finally ready to let go of their low-miles, well-maintained, adult-owned, garaged-and-loved Hondas. You will typically find these guys located on the outskirts of major cities (like Atlanta for example), they are successful guys and they've lead very busy lives so their motorcycles are low miles.

I told this to my younger brother in Huntsville, AL a year ago (in Springtime) and he started watching the Atlanta area Craig's List. During that spring two "old guy owned" 5th Gens popped up with low miles, lots of the best mods (one had a Two Brothers full stainless system and the other had a Staintune system). These bikes were not cheap but you're getting the best of the breed. My brother decided not to buy either one (wife issues).

We need a little more info to assist us.

    What is your budget?

Vtecs are newer - & a little easier to get...
They can also come with ABS...

If you want to tour then the 6th /7th /8 gen hard luggage is 'available'... Just sit down first if you ask at a Honda dealer..

My advice is to get a new/leftover 8th gen deluxe for dirt cheap and don't look back!

You should look at the Denver area (including outlying towns like Colorado Springs, Boulder and Ft. Collins). In two years (2016, 2017) I found and purchased two really nice low miles 5th Gens, a '99 and an '01. There seem to be a lot of "old guys" aging out of VFR ownership around here. I'd even go look at one for you.

Budget depends on the bike. I like the idea of a low dollar older bike and would consider 7000 for anew leftover, but really looking at around 4000. I,all start watching colorado

Speaking of Colorado, check out this thread by Getnoff where he tells of his several thousand mile quest from Orlando to Denver and back to get a leftover '14 for $5,399 with no dealer fees! It was a base model, but still, that is a freaking ridiculous low price to pay for such an awesome machine! Maybe they still have more at the same dealer?

5.4k for a new 8G is a steal and for me would probably be the solution to the question - albeit without gear-driven cams. My brother got himself a decent 5G which he is now rebuilding. Here in Europe, you will need to pay between 2.7k and 3k for a decent 5G. Add to that the cost for a decent rebuild - tires, chain, shock, fork springs, oil, air filter, spark plugs - you end up very close to 4.5k. If 8Gs would sell for less than 6k here (which they do not - a new 8G will at least cost 10k € here), I would always take the 8G, ride a new bike and save me a lot of work in the garage.

The red VFR in the classified section is the cleanest VFR you will find across the nation,.. the on listed as a show winner, $3,500.

Buying used you get what you get but as a V-Tech Gen 6 owner i would stay pre-Vtech all together.

I'll be picking up a nice '07 (gen 6, right?) Saturday. No doubt it will serve the purpose but still want a pre vetec so who knows what the future may be. I tried contacting the the with the "show bike" with no luck, and I found one in North Carolina i wanted but I didn't want the hassles of getting it to Omaha.

Glad to hear you found a VFR. The VTEC has its own charms, it's an interesting engine. You'll enjoy it.

Yes, this purchase will allow you to sit back and enjoy some riding while continuing to keep an eye out for that very nice 5th Gen. If after a while you're still interested in changing horses (buying that low-miles 5th Gen and selling on the nice 6th Gen) that won't be difficult.
