Just thought I'd sign up to this forum, to get the "full" VFR experience (between this place and VFRD).

Anyway, have been a member on VFRD for (many) years, and the old ozvfr site for about as many. Had a 4th-gen VFR back in the early noughties, sold it, then worked my way back to a 5th Gen, which I picked up 2nd-hand in 2006, and had 'till 2014. Sold it in favour of a Y2K Blackbird, which I sold last year (we were planning to move O/S for a while, but that fell through).

Bought another (well sorted) 5th Gen in May last year off a bloke who may well have been a member here (AB-Oz?). That 'bike has had most of the tweaks and mods that can be chucked at a VFR over the journey, including an SP2 front-end (hence the username), Ohlins rear (with Ohlins valving in the forks), and so on and so on...

I've made a few extra tweaks since picking it up, but it's pretty much as good as it'll get as it sits.

Look forward to hopefully contributing something worthwhile here and there. Certainly don;t have the breadth of mechanical knowledge some do, but I know my VFRs, and am keen to learn as much as I can...

    Hi mate.
I think I know the bike from pics only.
    Where in Oz are you?

In Canberra. It's AB's old 'bike. I've known AB on and off since the early noughties, and have followed the progressive build of the 'bike over the years. So, when I was effectively bike-less and his 'bike came up, I figured "why the hell not? Granted, it has some kms on it, but the suspension is relatively recently rebuilt both ends (and is quality kit). I had new bearings chucked in the steering head, and one or two other minor tweaks. And just in case, I've also purchased a spare engine with < half the kms of the original. Should be good to go for as long as I can be bothered riding, I reckon...

    I think you're right.
My 5G has 118000km and is still going like new.
But I have been thinking that if I come across a low km motor for the right price I'll snap it up.
I have spent too much time and money on this one to get rid of it.

I hear you. Granted, most of the serious money was spent on mine prior to me buying it, but even so, in the last year I've added:
SP1 wheel (with original SP2 set aside as spare). Imported from Japan, powder-coated.
    8-spoke rear wheel, powder-coated
    VFRNess, and mosfet-style Reg/Rec. (Plud two brand new OEM-style Reg/Recs...Paranoid much??? :)
    Tyga CF front guard
    New steering head bearings
VTR rad fan assembly (bought to do the VTR fan Blade mod.)

Not massive amounts of money, granted. But when the entire "package" is taken into account, for me this bike is a keeper. So I'm happy to accumulate spares here and there to keep it running as long as possible.

As for the engine, I got a little lucky, in that the guy selling had it advertised for $495, and then I'd have to do freight on top of that. "Bit much for me" I thought, so sat on it for a bit. Got back to him recently, and said that I could only offer $300 (plus $100 freight) and he accepted...apparently his wife want the engine - and the bike it came out of - out of their garage, so he was in a bit of a bind. So, for just over $400 shipped...I'm OK with that, given that higher km engines are going on eBay for $400-500 before shipping. And some twit has what he claims is a 37,000km old engine for sale...for $2200!

Cheap insurance against an (admittedly unlikely) engine failure down the track. Plus, I'll remove/replace all of the consumables on the spare, so it's ready to drop straight in as and when I need it.

IMG_1162.JPG Let me know if you're ever this way, I'd like to look over your bike.
The only thing I'm mulling over now is a quick shifter.
    Do I or don't I?
And how do I bypass the financial controller.

In all honesty, we do plan on getting up that way at some stage...looking to "retire" in QLD in the next couple of years, if we can manage it. As for the Financial Controller...no advice there. I do the financial stuff in our household, so not as much an issue for me. (The bigger issue is I'm a tight-arse...probably why I do the financial stuff in the 1st place ;)

If/when we get up there, will definitely look you up

I have my own bussines and run that side of the finances, but I have three daughters, two at uni and one in primary.
If I didn’t give all I make to to my wife to manage, I would have half a dozen bikes and not much else.
She uses it and puts enough away that we have a big family holiday OS every second year.
I also get my twice yearly six day bike trips with my mates so can’t complain.
Whatever happens, don’t let her sell the bike for how much she thinks it’s worth.

Sounds like you've got it well sorted!

Which bike trips do you do? Moto GP? Superbikes? Or...?

Frankly, I need to start pulling my finger out and doing some longer/multi-day rides...

We do six days to WSBK every year, its much more relaxed than MotoGP.
We also pick another one, last year was the Oxley.
This year we will do somewhere to Queensland.
Nothing quite like getting the bike redy and packed, and finally hitting the road with five mates going somewhere the long way round.
As a matter of fact, I was talking to someone at PI who lives in Sydney, and he's group went to PI via the Oxley. Talk about going the long way.

PS: you need to post some pics.

    Welcome RC46-SP2.
I have only had my VFR about 9months now and loving it. Amazing how many VFR's I'm starting to see now I have one.
Hoping to get about on some more weekend trips with my wife who also rides (CB400) with the aim of building up to longer ones. I have done PI 1/2doz times since my first GP in 89' last was WSBK 2016. Might not have to go that far soon with the new Track at Tailem Bend. I'm heading down for the ASBK round in April for a look.

I chucked a pic in the "photos" section, which seems to be garnering a modicum of attention...

Thanks mate. Appreciate the welcome. Depending on when I come out of contract (Possibly June, possibly later in the year), I'm going to look at some advanced riding stuff (Would love to have a crack at a couple of levels of Superbike School at PI), and possibly a longer trip or two (esp. if the Mrs is keen for a few weeks away...)

OK, I've got access to my computer, so will post a couple of pics of the beast...

The bulk of them show the 'bike as it is right now, with gold SP1 front wheel , and gold 8-spoke 3rd Gen wheel at rear. The last photo shows the bike with the SP2 front wheel it came with, along with the standard 5th Gen rear. Those have been set aside, and will have sports rubber fitted for some advanced riding courses/track days I intend to do later in the year. (Primarily as the SP2 front is lighter than the SP1 - 5-spoke versus 6, and the 5th Gen rear is easier to replace, should the unthinkable happen...)
