Looks to be a loose connection somewhere, the bummer is that’s not always easy to find. The first place I’d check is the fuse box area and double check or even replace the fuse that handles the dashboard. When my 6 Gen was blowing this fuse, the same thing happened to my dashboard, everything went out except the clock. Might be as simple as that but may require some hunting of wiring. If you have not done it already, grab the 6 Gen Honda Shop manual from VFRDiscussion and I believe there is also a color wiring diagram that someone put up there too.

If you lived closer, I’d be glad to help you figure it out. Good luck on your diagnosis.

    - ditto

Inherently you need to do the drill and depending on the results you are probably looking at replacing the RR and possibly the stator also.

By coincidence you might want to see another thread today which contains the relevant thread links.

If you can get access to multi-meter then there are several folks on here who may be able to walk you through the tests and then interpret the results

    Good luck

Thank you so much for the input and care into helping. <3 <3

Since I knew there were some warning signs with my grips last time I rode, I wanted to see what would happen today but I made sure to take my portable jump starter just in case...

    20180411_082918.jpg

After getting off work, sure enough the Moto would not start. Jumped the Moto and it got me 10 miles closer to home.

I made sure to make a highway exit that would be safe during rush hour just in case the motorcycle died when I stopped. Sure enough it did. Because of the traffic I pushed it about a block-and-a-half through traffic to the nearest drive.

    20180411_172220.jpg

I got out the jumper again. Moto started. But died within 30 seconds with the jumper still connected.

    I didn't want to push it 2 miles...after seriously contemplating it for a while...so I called AAA.

    20180411_182655.jpg

In my heart of hearts I knew it was the stator at least being a major player. Once home I dug in.

    20180411_215918.jpg

I am pretty beat and tired after a super long day. But I am very very thankful that this failure this time happened near home. I had a garage to bring it to. And the guts to tear into it myself. And I learned some things tonight.

    20180411_220944.jpg

Now when I can I will order the parts, poor teacher has to wait, and then I will learn how to put it all in myself. And now I am forced to do my own oil change which I have been terrified of since my oil spill.

Things always happen for a reason also! Speaking of people who would stop, there was so much traffic and it was obvious I was in distress. Two people stopped to help and stayed until the tow truck came. But it was a long while until they stopped and I was thinking that nobody would.

But I made two new friends today, they stopped because they know what it's like to be a stranded motorcyclist, and let me know if I needed a motorcycle lift that I could call them. Also the tow truck driver who knows many people in the motorcycle Community even though it is the Cruiser community. He said I would fit right in with everyone there even if I would be the Oddball out. We joked that I'm an oddball anyway so it wouldn't even matter.

The day was long, but I'm left thankful. And my baby is safe. 20180411_233106.jpg

Sorry to hear that it was the stator but at least you don’t have to do a lot of electrical trouble shooting! Trust me, that can be a nightmare. Good to see you got all that done by yourself and hopefully your parts will come in soon and you can be back on the road.

Welcome to the club that most VFR owners never want to be a member of but we do anyways. I was lucky and made it home on mine both times. If you have help, it might be a good time to beef up the charging system.

Paging mello dude, paging @mello dude ... Didn't you have a jig to get the stator on easily? Those damn magnets were a PITA!

Yeah - I have some extra long 6mm bolts with the head cut off to use as guide pins for stator installation....

Hey AM ---while you are down, go get your battery tested....and hope you took some meter readings? It's a good shot the stator is the bad part but it could also be an R/R too....if I was closer I would jump in and help..

I'm sure this crew here will coach you through all this stuff - GL

Great tip for guide pins, thanks and thanks for the inputs, friends!

Was hoping to do some basic drill readings when I got home, but knew in my heart stator was toast. Smelling crispy wires sealed the deal, but I still didn't want to believe it...until moto croaked in traffic.

I've never personally had a new R/R or stator fitted while I've owned moto.

    So I tore open moto.
    Figured it's about time.

Will definitely search forums for tips and whatnot. I'll ask up if I get stuck.

BTW, a fellow Viffan sent a YouTube video. Guy was installing an R/R using a mounting plate it's sounds like you made...he at least gave credit to a mello dude. Looked like amazing work!

I've seen that- a goofy looking Australia guy...yeah, that's my stuff. I make mount plates for 6th gens for upgraded R/R's, among other VFR parts...

Btw - I do agree your stator looks nasty as can be.....

If funds are tight, it may be worth enquiring locally to see if there is any local firm who will be able to clean and then re-wind your burned up stator. I found a few firms over here in France and their price even with shipping costs was much less than buying a brand new part from Honda or David Silver Spares.

If you have a friendly local garage they would be well worth dropping in and asking if they know any local firms equipped to rewind the stator. If the local garage has no suggestions then it may be worth a trip to the nearest biker hangout and ask. Chances are someone has already had just the same problem and they may know if there is a local firm able to fix the stator for a lot less than Mr H would charge you.

You would need to take/send them the old stator complete with any wires, bits or connectors which you cut off to get the old stator out. They can then usually work out quite easily what bits came from where and then after rewinding the stator they will re-attach all original connectors - so I hope you did not throw anything away.

Some fellow viffer guys have had good luck with Custom Rewind for stators. Its about half the cost of new too... - Birmingham, Alabama

Good news is that parts are coming. I definitely thought of getting the stator rewound but I got that taken care of. Thank you for the ideas for doing so. If this keeps happening, I will have to consider other ideas.

I have not found anything away, so that can still be an option if needed.

In the meantime while I am waiting for parts to arrive, I am finally giving my Moto a thorough look through with all the electricals myself, a thorough cleaning, and whatnots.

This is what I find today...

Temp sensor if I am correct?
    How you still work?

    And wonder how that happened...

Gonna be a turd having to redo this.

That's not good AM... you need to split the plastic shield to see what wires are damaged at that cut area. Very carefully come at it with a knife. You probly can feel the cables inside the tube and push to one side. - I probly would go a half inch up and a half inch down go around the whole thing, then split it up from the back. Finesse is the word. Sometimes if can split it open, a small pair of scissors can be used to snip the plastic around the shield. -- Dont cut the cables inside.

    BTW - good catch!

Thank you for the tips. Finesse. I'll remember that. Definitely stepping into new territory here, but not as scary to me as putting on a new oil filter. :/

Looks like removing the three screws I can get at the entire bit of wire, which I'm happy for. Important I think for the to measure the length to make sure new repair matches.[IMG]

    Got its!

    Question...

Only one wire is damaged, but the other has obvious compression. Would it be necessary or prudent to to repair the not-so-damaged one as well?

I would be tempted to do the scissor cut/split open on the plastic shield to take a look, it may need fixed anyhoo.. . The other you will need to splice in a fix. - You will also need to cut open that plastic shield to see whats going on... more finesse, be sure not to cut wires...Sneak it in in that area thats allready cut open...
Btw - Autozone has a reasonable electric supply to do your fixes...

Thank you for your help tonight!

By plastic shield are you talking about the piece arrowed here? Don't think I'm following what you may be saying by plastic shield. I be sorries.

Ahhh, AutoZone right by me! But been hard pressed to find electrical flux. Other than that, they be so good!![IMG]
