    As a FYI,
In the UK (& probably EU), it is illegal to mount tyres that are NOT Type Approved for that vehicle.

This means your vehicle will fail its yearly test & is more than likely grounds for insurance to be revoked too.

In other words, you can't fit car tyres on bikes & bike tyres on cars. 3 wheelers come under a different category & are not included in this.

This will explain why its not really considered over here too - even if you ignore all the other issues.

If you know of a solid rubber tire available for motorcycle wheel sizes, provide a source; that would be helpful in this thread.

Over 13 million miles ridden with car tires amounted on motorcycles with zero issues, I think that's enough evidence to show that it can be done safely.
That's far more practical evidence than you can provide for your claim that they are not safe to be ridden on motorcycles.

This whole subject was beat to death way back in 08-09. Ride what you want. I can't understand why you would want your bike to handle a lot worse, cause your suspension not to work as designed, change you riding style to accommodate the physics of riding on a CT sidewall, and on and on just to get more miles out of a tire?! Come on man, if you can afford a nice bike you can afford the right tool for the right job. A MC tire on a motorcycle. You have yet to address any of the data I have provided that definitively says this is a bad idea and just lay up how 13 million miles makes it safe. Out of the billions of safe MC tire miles. We can agree to disagree.

Just because you can't imagine something, doesn't mean that can't be done by anyone else.

I choose the right tool for the right job, I commute 120+ miles one-way twice a week on highways with my car tire mounted Burgman 650, speed above 75 mph for 40-50 miles at a time without stop or slowing down.

I have options to choose within my garage many different bikes ride, and what works for me is car tire over long distance on highways.

Just because you are too blind to see the evidence provided, doesn't mean that it can't be done safely.

Just because I can afford nice bikes doesn't mean that I should waste money when there are better options to tire choices for my purpose.

How often do anyone actually use 100% performance capability of your moto-specific tires anyway?

Agree to disagree is when you can't provide evidence that car tire is unsafe with actual sources and numbers under practical testing conditions.

To me personally, when anyone who can't provided evidence to support their claim, that's just BSing..

Aw c'mon, just let it go. As I've repeated several times, you're not going to convince
anyone on this list to do something as stupid as you advocate. Just accept it and move
on. Otherwise you will become even more tiresome than you already are.

Of course you are out.. because there is no practical evidence nor sources that you can provided that show clear comparison or indication that using car tire on motorcycle's rear wheel is any more dangerous than using motorcycle specific tires. Other than your personal feeling after few hours in the saddle of a bike that you don't normally ride.

I will even go further to say that motorcycles are having far many accidents even using moto-specific tires than those using car tire on the rear wheel.

How many squids kill themselves each day using moto-specific tires doing stupid stuff?

    Whilst trying to remain objective.

I will have to say you haven’t provided much evidence either. Other than the “over 13 million miles “you quote. Where did that originate please?

In relation to your statement regarding accidents, can you provide any statistics with regards to car tyre vs motorcycle tyre? I would be interested to see them.

Especially where it comes to new motorcyclists using car tyres. Or is that a preserve of the more experienced motorcyclist?

What I did learn in my studies of the dark side that no-one has mentioned, so far, is that the beads are totally different.

I was ready to LOCK this cursed thread yesterday due to the insults and the fact that the dead horse has been beat so bad that it is down to just a plump of raw flesh now. :deadhorse: However, come today, I found an interesting article on mounting car tires to a motorcycle rim that I thought I would share. Check it out when you get a chance.

Oh, and some healthy debate is welcome, but please try to behave as this thread has already gotten out of hand several times.

Yeah, you have to use a car wheel to put the car tires on.

Okay, you should use a car wheel for a car tire.

    And I'm done with this.

In my previous post first page of this thread:

No, I cannot provide actual statistics, but it is not difficult to imagine what kind of motorcycles wreck the most and what tire they might have.

I never said new rider should try riding motorcycle with car tire mounted.
I wouldn't recommend any new rider riding anything more than 250cc, let alone try car tire.
Try it at your own risk, if you are looking to change tire less frequently, less down time with your motorcycle due to tire changes, spend less money on tires.. car tire may just be worth a try; if you are confident with your riding skills.

Tire bead shape is different when tire is not inflated.

Tire bead conform to the shape of the rim/wheel once inflated, you wouldn't ride a new tire without seating the bead first would you?

    Interesting article:

    https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-cu...iders-prefer-auto-tires-on-their-motorcycles/

...Naturally, not everyone is thrilled about this Darkside business and compelling arguments against it have been made. But some of these arguments fail to take into account the development gap between car and bike tires. Sure, the cornering loads are way different on a bike tire than a car tire — but what if a car tire is just so much better that it has enough reserve performance in that situation anyway?

...The idea of car tires on a motorcycle might seem silly, but they once said that about turbodiesel passenger cars, all-wheel-drive sedans, and folding hard tops. In the end, try as we might to resist, we all end up on the Dark Side.

Interesting thread for a VFR site.

Personally I've always enjoyed a good square tire, they are possibly the most safe, since you can't really go that fast and as a result they last for years and years, and (rim shot) they corner excellent! :Bolt:

If you have ridden your VFR with square tire.. or any car or bike with square tire.. you'd be the first to post it here for sure. Share your experience riding with unusual tires mounted on your bike.
BS like that doesn't add any value to the thread, encouraging posts like it doesn't promote any positive value to this forum.

actually never thought about the extra effort of holding the bike up when stopped on a slope. it seems like with those big bikes that would particularly be a deterrent. I know that damned heidenau scout I ran went for a lot of miles. I don't remember how much exactly, but it was over 10,000 on the rear. It was kind of squared off and I didn't love that in corners. I felt a fair amount of rear end stepping out, but I would just back off the throttle a little and stop it sliding. Still not my favorite feeling.

Hardest job is keeping the front and rear tires in sync, makes for a very sea saw ride otherwise!

Thanks for that link derstukka. It led me to this one below.

    http://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15560

That is some great data to peruse. I would say the following. While someone CAN stand on top of a car moving at 60MPH, naked, and drinking a beer without dying, it is ultimately a very bad idea. Facts and science all show clearly why it is such a bad idea, but some would do it anyway because they think it's fun. Indian Larry thought riding his bike without a helmet and doing stunts was a bunch of fun too, until it killed him.

All the real, empirical evidence out there in the world shows it is a bad idea to run car tires on bikes. I believe everything to do with motorcycles is a safety issue, and there is no way I am willfully engaging in what is without question proven not to improve safety. I like motorcycling too much to knowingly make such a poor choice as running a car tire on my bike.

That was even more researched and in-depth than the articles I posted, extremely thorough with no bias, just facts. And as he said at the end of the long post, he does not think any amount of imperial evidence will change the mind of a person who wants to run car tires on motorcycles, he just gave the facts. Its all fun until someone loses an eye. lol
