Hey guys! Decided to change the clutch discs on my 2000 VFR800, but I stumbled upon a disconcerting rattle from the center clutch holder. Here's a video showing it:
The other thing is that the bike does a little bit of rattle if in neutral AND first gear and the sound seems to be coming either from the clutch cover or from the driving sprocket. So, how screwed am I or is this normal?

It sounds like the basket is loose on the shaft. You need to get the nut undone and have a look. New basket easy fix , new shaft very bad.

Gonna get the clutch basket holder tool and remove the nut. Here's to hoping I'll just need a new basket.
The nut is staked, yes, but AFAIK you can force it out by unscrewing the nut. I don't want to change the nut as well if I don't REALLY need to.

So yeah, managed to strip out everything to the bare shaft and the rattle is still there. Here's a video:

Don't know what to do at this point...

no basket holder necessary. just stuff a rag or coin or bit of wood between the gears. a penny will bend in use but the soft copper is OK for the gears.

    cost: 0.01 U$D

Thats odd, not sure if thats right. Looks like theres some slack there. Your basket and the splines on the shaft look to be fine its the slack on the shaft making the rattle noise.
If it were me id reassemble it and just ride it and hope it doesnt get any worse. Or sell it

    I
I'm kinda leaning towards the same thing myself. Looking at the service manual, crankcase disassembly on this bike is a bitch, as you have to remove the swingarm along with the engine from the frame to get to the transmission. I don't have tools nor the time to do it myself.

I'm not sure if that is normal or not; every bike I've ever had has some slack through the driveline, so you can rock the back wheel back and forth quite a bit when the bike is in gear with the engine off, and its not all just from the chain slack.

Yeah, a couple of friends told me the same thing. Decided I'm gonna put the bike back together and ride it a bit. If I stumble upon any other issues related to this, I'll update the thread describing my experience. :)
