Are any of our members CHP officers? Bike or Car based patrols?
I'd love to pick your brain about your experience on the job, general attitude of CHP toward MC riders, misconceptions the public may have, etc.

What Allyance said - with as much anti-LE sentiment present on this site, you'd be lucky to get a PM... In case no one acks up, here is a link to a documentary from last year... https://we.tl/uGOIOyscWh (link is only good for 7 days)

Just like out in the real world, not everyone is anti-LE, just some people. For whatever reason, I've seen it more on motorcycle and firearms forums lol. IMO, it's not THAT bad Here although it can be a little disappointing to see people (some of whom otherwise seemed mature, squared away, and decently educated) suddenly reveal themselves to be of that mindset.

    I'm pro law enforcement.

But does fleecing the public via speed traps actually count as law enforcement?

Here's a test of whether something is law enforcement or not:

Case #1, if somebody robs a bank and the police chase him down and catch him but then discover that the robber is a neighbor/friend of the family/relative/etc., how likely are the police to let him off with a warning? Yeah, you're right, it's a rhetorical question. Of course they arrest him (because he broke laws).

Case #2, if a policeman pulls somebody over for speeding and discovers that the speeder is a neighbor/friend of the family/relative/has a great set of tits/etc., he lets the speeder off with a warning because... why? Either it's law enforcement or it's not, make up your mind Mr. Policeman.

You sound POSSIBLY like you're pro LE but you're definitely anti-LEO.

As far as traffic enforcement goes - there have been studies done that show a definite correlation between enforcement and accidents - the higher the enforcement (including tickets issued) the lower the accident rate.

FWIW, IMO citations for the sole purpose of revenue is BS. That being said, a "speed trap" may or may not be an actual Speed Trap.

As far as your stereotypical generalization of officer discretion, well:
    1. On the flip side of your There are also cops who have given and continue to give other cops tickets too.
    2. Not everyone who is a "neighbor/friend of the family/relative/has a great set of tits/etc" gets off with a warning.
    3. Haters gonna hate. Go ahead and keep hating or come up with a better system.

I think they generally recc that officers refrain from using social media so I'd be surprised if too many "active" CHP pipe up. There's really no benefit to them to pipe up.

You are a little off base here Greg.

A person works in a store where he has discretion as to whether or not he gives a customer a break on the price. A total stranger comes in to buy a drill. He pays full price. But the salesclerk then serves his neighbour for the same drill and gives him 40% off. The price is the price...or is it.

I had certain guidelines I held for minor offenses. Police, firefighters and military received a far greater area of tolerance for speeding If someone does not like that, well then I really don't give a shit. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of people who I have never met before that got the same break for some reason or other. That was my discretion as a n enforcement officer That is supported in case law. No one can dictate that to me or take it away from me. Just like no one can tell the sales clerk who he may or may not give a deal to.

BTW. I have done both. I recently worked for a tool retailer and did cut many who I believed deserved it, a deal on price.

A foot note. I went to a collision years ago. I got there and the collision was between a former police officer and now a civilian co-worker in my detachment, and a friend of mine. The other party was also a friend from a different circle of friends. Now, the dilemma. I have never been to a collision where a charge could not be laid for and offense that caused the collision Such was the case here. The ex policeman committed an offence and got a ticket for it, written by me.

Why bother to give the "store example" if you don't give a shit whether somebody likes police treatment of laws?

And, while we're talking about your example, it made no sense at all. It wasn't relevant or applicable (because what we're discussing is the selective enforcement of laws).

I was talking about law enforcement. In case that sentence isn't clear enough, I was talking about the enforcement of laws.

If a policeman pulls me over and writes me a ticket for speeding I realize that's just tough luck for me, everyone exceeds speed limits (some people do it more than others). The part I find really offensive is when writing/delivering the ticket the policeman feels he has any right to the moral high-ground from which to lecture me about the enforcement of laws or public safety when we both know he selectively lets other people (friends of the family, neighbors, women with great tits, etc.) off for the exact same offense.

That's not law enforcement. Selective enforcement of laws is not law enforcement. I don't know a better way to describe/characterize it than that.

If anything the policeman should just state his intention to selectively enforce the law at his whim, admitting openly that he's choosing to penalize me for something he selectively doesn't penalize others citizens for. Or he just keep his pie-hole completely shut and simply hand over the ticket.

Every job on the planet has discretion. From federal prosecutors, to the guy making your dinner at a restaurant.

You should like the CHP then. Their pullover to ticket ratio is one of the highest in the country, around 95% (quoted to me long ago by a LEO). If the CHP pulls you over, you were doing something against the law and they are going to ticket you.

I was once in the 5% then, I was pulled over for speeding and was coming back from a winery, where the wife and I had shared a flight of wine samples. When he pulled us over he had a plethora of questions and even asked if I had anything to drink and I answered truthfully but was very precise about time, quantities and even a full description of my morning up until he pulled me over (even details of what I had for breakfast). He let me off with a warning to watch my speed. I guess they were more or less looking for DUI targets that day.
