8th gen oil usage? Or any Gen while under 7,000 miles

Have any of you had to fill your oil up with about a 1/8 to 1/4 of a quart of oil when the bike has under 7,000 miles? They following is a bit of my bikes history
    • Break-in the dealer let it warm up and told to ride it hard and fluctuate the RPM's even close to redline in the first 600 miles. I was weary but did it for the first time in 3 bikes new.
    • Changed to oil to pure syth and overfilled it for about 600 miles about a 1/8-1/4 quart and corrected it.
    • While riding up a canyon I had it go super nova at 263 degrees and boiled out the radiator when I stopped. GYSER ALERT;-) let it cool down and coasted down 18miles of canyon and the temp was correct after changing the failed radiator cap and coolant. No continual overheating afterwards or know engine damage.
    • I do get some smoke "white" while warming up but it disapates around 153degrees engine temp. But I think I do smell something out of the exhaust and never had syth before I don't know what it smells like if coming out of the exhaust.
I think I may have done something to the piston rings. Maybe not failed but compromised a bit to let oil burn out. Let me know what you think or if this is something that I should not really worry about. Thanks all!

Wow, it does sound like it's been seriously abused, albeit not intentionally.

Did the warm up from the dealer consist of letting it idle until it reached a certain temperature? Varying the RPM is a
good idea, IMO running near the redline with a new engine, not so much. IMO idling for much more than 30 sec or so
    is not a good thing.

I don't think I'd be concerned with the slight over fill, not a great thing, but not horrible. Especially 1/8th of a quart.

Why did it go "super nova"? That is the main thing I would be concerned with, especially the stopping while it was still
so hot. That just leaves the heat to bake into the engine. White smoke while warming up could be an indication of a leaky
head gasket, and water being burnt off, but it also could be simply condensation in the engine burning off. How long does
the smoke last? Have you noticed any drop in coolant level? Or oil in the coolant?

You shouldn't smell anything out of the exhaust but the products of combustion.

Honestly I would do a simple compression test just to ease my mind.

so small an amount of oil loss is normal on a new bike and nothing to fret about. on the other hand, the overheating might have fried your onion rings.

    keep monitoring oil consumption.

few of us would agree with that dealer on how to break in a new engine, especially regarding high-rpms.......if you want it to last.

Even I questioned him, but buying a bike with new tech over the previous bike 11 years earlier I stupidly went for it thinking this engine was meant to be broken in like that. After the first couple of days revving up and down from 3-9k and hit 10k once or twice. I started thinking that this guy who was the general manager of the dealership, was laughing knowing that I would be paying for a re build. ;-). But changing the oil in 600 miles and then changing again after another 25oo miles to full syth. I did not pay much attention to the oil use prior to the overheating of the bike. Like I said I was on top of a canyon at over 11,000 ft. I let the temp get from 263 to 22o and then coasted the bike down the canyon and the temp went down to 170 or so. I got it home and got a cap and fluid. after about 2 hours afterwards took the bike out and the bike ran as normal. I am a wrencher or one of diligence looking at a new bikes fluid use especially being a Honda. That is my downfall. I trust the machine to much and should be more mindful that this a motorcycle, not a car and only having a year warranty. I have to have the tires changed at the end of the season and have my done rather than myself due to tools. I will have the shop do a compression test in sept to tell me if anything is wrong and I will monitor the oil usage weekly now with this concern. Thanks guys. She runs and does not smoke to much. I am sure it is the water vapor because it does disappear after warming up to 150. I am just paranoid after the cap failure being just slightly used at 5,600 miles. But the bike was 3 yrs old when it happened and only one in my hands. Rubber does have a life span.:)

My 2014 (purchased new in 2016) has 6200 miles, and I have not noticed any oil consumption at all. I went to full synthetic at 600 miles and have changed the oil one time since. I broke in my engine the way the tech recommended, which was “Break it in just like you would ride normally.” I don’t get any smoke, white or otherwise, at startup, unless the humidity is very high and then I see a few puffs of vapor.

Here’s a post from a bmw forum. It’s well worth a read especially the posts from “grumpy ol fart” who is talking about oil filters, the oil post is on page 5.

Best not take part in any oil or oil filter discussions in the future then unless you have pain relief handy.

My eight gen uses some oil. So does my sons 2017 CBR500R. I think this is normal.

I need the "Dick & Jane" version of technical discussions. like "Dick said shit gets in oil. Jane says Ok what else." OH IN BIG LETTERS so I can see it. :D:Bounce:

Mine has used a little oil, but not enough to concern me. If you ride it hard, I think it would be a good idea to keep an eye on the oil level.

Son of a Bitch! I had to put another 1/4 quart in her 900 miles later today. No smoke that I can really see, no drips or pools under the bike! I do smell what I think is normal exhaust. I do see a little carbon build up, or burnt oil in the stainless pipe. I think I just turned my bike into a 2 stoke! FU...! 7860 miles on her and she is drinking oil like she has 50,000. She runs fine and engine temp stay within 187-220. Looks like a compression test is in order. I know I fucked up listening to the original dealer, to bad he sold the dealership and it is gone to another town or I would be at his place, and in his face!

Honestly, I think the dealer's break in advice was not good, but I think most of the issues, if there are indeed any, stem from the
heat soak resulting from that scorching run up the canyon. That's where my concern would lie. But that's JMO of course.

Just changed my oil after 9000+ miles, never added any during that time and level was still between the marks. Manual says 8K, but Amsoil pure synthetic extends that figure no problem.

I try and keep to what the manual says, my arthritis has made it difficult to get down and work on bike. Poor guys on the BMW forum are still using K&N filters!

FWIW, the dates on the BMW site linked to, were, for the most part, about 10 years old.

Yeah, I think that I have some minor ring damage from both factors (I say minor due to no smoke). Like I said no visible smoke but a small burning off mile to mile. Time for a compression test in Sept. That is when the tires should be shot and while in for a swap I will have the shop look at the issue. I will keep riding until then since I know that I am not doing any more damage to it and she runs well. I also need to justify changing to the T30Evos I have been sitting on since last sept. I Put another 75 miles on her today and tomorrow is a state holiday in Utah and I will go do a few canyon runs as well. When I get home before the fireworks I will look at the oil usage again.
