Hi folks. My name is Sam. so I bought an 800fi. It runs but all the fairing and lights are missing and I don’t have the gauge cluster or keys. I want to ride it once but then I gotta decide if I wanna put it back together or part it out. Bought it from a storage unit auction so I don’t have the title for it. Would be a lot of work. Has an aftermarket regulator and risers. Good tire too.
Hi Sam and Welcome. Sadly any bike with that sort of history would immediately put me on guard as likely to be both a long term project and potential money pit. For me life and especially time to do things is too short hence I prefer to be out riding my VFR rather than wrenching. But each to his own - if you like the challenge of rebuilding it, then there are a few folks on here who have fixed basket cases before and may be willing to offer their views. A few photos of what you actually purchased might help more experienced people give you an honest assessment of whether it makes sense to try and fix it or part it out. Take care SkiMad
did you check to see if all (or even just some) of the missing parts wheren't simply stored away with the VFR800 in boxes in the storage unit? Sure would make re-assembling the bike easier if you had all the removed parts.
It’s a hot wiring mess. Rode it last night. (No seat, rectifier burning my butt. ) I should just part it out.
Wow! Got it running and took it out for a little ride. This bike is extremely torquey. It also sounds like music in my ears. I had to put gas into it through the fuel gauge sender opening because I don't have the keys. I took the tumblers out of the ignition switch and just use any key to turn it on. I sat on a seat cushion to pad the frame. No gauges so I didn't push it too bad to over rev it, but just hitting that throttle would spin the rear tire so easy.
