I have been chasing this intermittent problem for about 6 months now. Go for a ride and anywhere from 3 to five miles out the bike dies. Feels like it is running out of gas. Wait a minute or two and it will run run fine for the rest of the day.
So far I have checked the fuel lines for obstructions. Installed new fuel filter. Checked that the tank is venting. Replaced the fuel pump. replaced the coils. Installed VFRness. Replaced fuel petcock. Installed new regulator/rectifier.
Last thing I can figure is the fuel cut relay doesn't work sometimes till it warms up so today I put in a bypass switch.
Does anyone know of a reason why this might be a bad idea or for that matter, is there something else I have missed?

I had something similar happening with my ST1100, it would drop onto 3 cylinders when partly warmed up and sometimes stall completely. Once I replaced the spark plugs, it was good as gold.

yes, it's a good idea to have a switch to bypass the pump relay !

when my '86 700 used to quit when hot i checked and replaced the pickup coils to fix the problem.......instead of throwing a shopping cart full of new parts at it. :Brick:

Thanks for the responses guys. Yes, charging system checks out and bike has new plugs and coils.

It figures that since I installed the bypass switch I've had no problems.
    Frustrating to say the least.

Do you have high levels of ethanol in your fuel?

My 1000 FF came from Germany where they do, and the bike had stood for a good while before I got it. There was all sort of crystalised shite in the tank that would occassionaly clump enough to block fuel flow.

It would manifest as the two RHS cylinders giving up first, followed by the other two and total stoppage.

After a good tank clear out it solved the problem.

Check the fuel feed direct from the tank and see if there's anything blocking the fuel flow, and see if the tank breather is working too. You might just be getting a vacuum lock.

Looks like the mystery is solved. I went out this morning and the bike tried to die. Flipped the switch and presto, no more problem. Thanks for the responses guys. Now I need to look for a replacement relay.
