When I bought my 03 used at a dealer he told me he put on a new front tire. I didn’t notice any gloss or tire hairs so I figured he put a new to the bike used tire.

I noticed slight cupping on the left side after about 1500 miles so I made sure everything was true on the front, it was, so I just figured cheap tire I will never buy.

4K miles on it and I happened to notice this when I was checking pressures.

Thank God I didn’t wait any longer to check pressures.

I would say that you're a lucky man that you survived on that old skin this long. I've never seen a tire in that condition before...rears yes but not fronts.

Forgot to add, it turns out the tire was manufactured in 2002. I'm sure it was the original because it was one of the tires listed in the handbook.

How the hell did you not notice that tire condition a long time ago? You really need to up your walk-around
procedure. Tires are something you check at least every other ride. Not checking your tires can easily lead to
you checking the condition of the pavement you're sliding down, up close and personal.

LOL. I commute 50 miles per day, 6 days a week, year round, rain or shine. I put 15k miles on my CBR in the first year. I've put 5k+ miles on my VFR since April. I go through 2-3 rears and 1 front per year. I check my pressures every other week. As far as noticing the tire wear, well it went from mild cupping to threads showing in less then 3 months. I had aired up the week prior and threads were not showing but I knew I'd need a new tire soon just didn't expect that soon. This is more about a 16 year old tire that was promoted as a new tire by the dealer.

I too have a round trip of 100 miles per day in all weathers.

Has a new pr4 on at the end of June and it has 2.5 mm of tread left after 3000 miles. On average clock up between 1200 and 2 k miles per month so like you quite a few tyres in a year. I don’t know your route but mine is fast n twisty for most of it, say less than 5 miles is at a 30 mph limit. So it’s pretty hard on tyres. Usually check tyre pressures every week and inspect tyres at same time.

Should you not have checked? Seriously if your changing tyres regularly you should know what’s new on the market and what’s not?

Are you relatively new to biking by any chance? If so I do apologise for my sharpness

I think we have a misunderstanding.

I checkover/air-up/clean/lube bi-weekly. I do all of my own maintenance on all of my vehicles.

I knew I would need a tire shortly due to the cupping getting worse, figured I'd have a couple weeks. In about a week it went from moderate cupping to threads showing. I noticed no difference in performance/vibration/traction/whatever. I'm partially guilty, I take a sweeping left between 95-107, it's just one of those perfect curves that begs for speed. I'm sure that was a huge contributing factor in accelerated wear and I should have been paying closer attention than bi-weekly in hindsight. I only felt the cup vibration above 103mph. The part thatI don't take blame for is that I was told it was a "new" tire by the dealer. If I was told it was 16yrs old I would have replaced it as soon as possible. I chalked up the cupping to being a cheap tire not ancient rubber.

Not trying to defend the OP, but we had a rider with us once on a group ride, the rear tire was looking like it was getting close to wear markers on the center when we sopped at the Rock Store. From the time we left the Rock Store to the time we got to Neptune's Net (~18 miles) the belts were showing!

You're right, not overnight, as I said earlier it went from minor to moderate cupping in about 2500 miles, then moderate to threads in about 300'ish miles. Keep in mind, the tire was 16 years old, it was probably getting overheated due to age/cupping/aggressive riding.

I presume the dealer did not actually put a new tire on which meant the bike other than the 8k miles on it sat for 16 years.

Curves at 95-107 mph on that tire? Man you need to pay a lot more attention to what you're riding.

Wait?! WHAT?! I have two tires?!

Ya, Rear center is to the markers and I have a staple in it, probably replace it this or next weekend. I must throw the CBR around more, the rear sides tend to wear before the center unlike the VFR. Course, I'm still getting used to the VFR weight and responses to throwing her around.
