    Wanted,

race / performance parts for 86-89 VFR 750. Looking for, but not limited to:

Any HRC race kit parts (exhaust, radiator, rims, front end, wiring loom, cams etc)
    Rear sets
    Race rear subframe / bodywork

I am running an 88 VFR750 FJ in a race series here in Australia called New Era. Any setup tips, do's and don'ts, especially engine tuning (jetting, best plugs to run, timing/ignition set up, can run racing fuel? and so on) most welcome!

    Rgds,
    Jason Light

If you have a 88 J you have a 41mm forks and 17" wheels right?

The 86-87 HRC bits for engine as pipe and cams will not fit as you got diffrent parts.
I would suggest finding a more open pipe like a Laser slip on or Motad full exhaust, are still made. And a jet kit.
If you only ride track whit it, then remove the fan behind the radiator, saves a lot of weight.
As for wheels you can proberly fit a newer Honda wheel whit floated discbrakes as you have 296mm discs. For the rear a CBR 1000f wheel can be made to fit. Spocket needs to be moved inside, stock brake disc fits and is right distanse from center of wheel.

    Good look!

    Thanks,

Yep it is the 17" model, and I know they did have bigger valves for example over the 86-87 but I had been led to believe cams for one thing were compatible? Certianly a lot of parts were common so I would still think a lot if not all 86-87 bits would fit. Radiator fan is coming off, plus some other bits that will save weight, but how about fuel pump - can you set these up for gravity / vacuum feed only???

At least mine does already have CBR600 wheels however I would still be interested in lighter aftermarket or HRC rims from the racing period (late 80's)

Thanks for the advice, bit by bit I'll get this bike how I want it! It's half the fun, right??

I'd leave the fan on and hook up a manual switch for it. When you start making some real HP it will heat up more. Waiting on the grid, the cool down lap and cruising through the pits is where lots of bikes start puking water.

For the Fuek pump, I guess its a must.
For the cams, The 86-87 VFR had scruve adustable valves, and the 88-> VFRs has chim adjustable valves, so I think the cams aint the same.
The 2 bikes look werry alike but many parts are diffrent:
the 88-89 has diffrent electrical system, fork, wheels (thro rear fits betwen the models), subframe, lower front fearing, exhaust, front brakes, frame (front part), engines top and so on. One big ? for me is the shock length, as I know the rear linkage is identical whit a 87. The 86 and 87 also has soem diffrences, like rear shock + linkage and electrical (ignition mostly)

Also I just found in a dealers catalog micron exhaust a RACE exhaust listed for the 86-87 VFR750F and the 88-89 VFR750F !

Rear sets are kinda tricky on this bike. The frame is not symmetrical where the brackets mount and the rear master cylinder mounting is tight. But obviously anything is possible.

I am currently working on 1990 CBR1000F rear wheel conversion for one of mine (5.5" wide vs 4.5 for 1991-1993 CBR600 wheels. 95-98 CBR600 gets you 5.0", but mounts exactly like the 4.5" rim). The hub needs to be modified, but you can get the sprocket and wheel in the right place... barely. I am matching the front with some 1993 CBR1000F fork tubes in 1991 VFR lowers to get the CBR1000 rim and take the 1991 larger VFR rotors and calipers that don't have those tiny CBR600 brake pads.

No real reason to go that wide on these bikes, but I just wanted the challenge and the look of some different rims than most other conversions. Plus cleaning those damn CBR600 wheels SUCKS!.

I've got a NOS RC30 wiring harness but I'm not sure if that would be of any use to you.
