Anyone that is only running pure gas ever track mileage result benefit? I just started to pay attention and it seems that I get 3mpg better mileage but have not done a comparision truly only by memory.

That's about right. Ethanol has less energy than gasoline so lower MPG with ethanol.

We only have 98 octane E5% and 95 oct. E10% on the pump.

You can buy ethanol free gas from a hardware store, but it's around 10-20€/litre so totally way out of reasonable, for anything else than maybe off season preservation purpose.

I've found out that some cars cooe better with ethanol than others. My mpg dropped way more than 10% compared to the 98E5 on a 1.8 renault (volvo v40), while a slightly newer 1.6 renaut did almost the same mileage on 98 and 95..

Here in Belgium You can by from SHELL V POWER = ethanol free included additive's to clean the engine.
    Just a .50€ more.
Have ride now 5000km. with no ethanol and the bike drive just very fine.
Making a little more km's on a tank.

Yea, everywhere else it seems to be so. We have 5% ethanol also in v-power. The government forced this on everyone selling fuel. Finland sucks.

We are getting 3-5 mph faster at the track on the long back straight running Rec 90 instead of 93 with ethanol. R1's and CBR 1000rr's.

I do wonder, if it would be okay to run e10 or even re85 if the plugs and timing are tuned to get the most out of ethanol.

That still would leave the hygroscopic issue, (ethanol attracts water) and also the rubber degradation issues.

And you can't get more out if you put less in. As in, low energy content of ethanol. Just add more stuff to the combustion. Forced induction would surely help.

There are old carb cars and newer efi, mostly turbo cars that are converted to run just fine with the cheap-ish re85 fuel.

Maybe they are able to make it ecologically sound once the production is localized enough and there is enough demand for it. I assume that most of the ethanol produced here, gets shipped overseas, not too ecological.. A bit like the electric cars.

Water is still abundant on this planet, except for those wealthy oil sheik corners of the world. And Sahara desert. So why not put all developement assets in hydrogen cell instead? Surely it would be standard by now, if all the effort put to all the other junk would have been directed there from the get-go. I'm assuming too many ties to the oil industry has been the hindrance, along with, why change anything if it works, mentality.

Some hillbillies and rednecks around here run their old diesels off of self made methane gas, or hydrogen. Being witchunted by jealous neighbours and the govt. for not paying fuel taxes... There are all sorts of alternatives for sure.

Where is here? go to pure-gas.org if you haven't already. It lists all of the availability in the U.S. by State.

Well, Blackslide that is better that most of our stations using up to 10% which is the norm of almost every station. It is hard to find True gas. In Utah mainly Salt lake City I can only find 3 stations that have true gas and even less around the state. Luckily I live 1.7 miles from one and the other two are more than 10 miles. So if I stay in the valley I am fine it is when you go out on a trip that the search is tougher!;-) I can get 218-220 miles out of a tank. So I try to plan ahead if possible. But at 5% that is much better than 10% if it gives you and comfort. You are good, you don't have our politics so I would be really happy to be only pissed about ethanol!;-)

    Well, we only have either 95e10 or 98e5, + shell v-power 99e5.

I'm just obsessing about it, because ethanol breaks down old rubber and vacuum diaphragms are not available anymore for the 3rf and 4th gen bikes.

I can't tell any difference nor do I care because I only ride in the twisties. Power is definitely up with real gas but I really don't care what kind of mileage my VFR gets. It's a recreational device for me, not a transportation device. Ethanol gas is just another government subsidized welfare program. People are starving around the world and we put corn in gasoline. Must be stinking politicians in the mix here.

Unfortunately I didn't find ethanol free gas. But did two slightly different passes, running shell 98+e5 yesterday.

I got 4.5 l/100km(63mpg) on a 100km(62mi jolt), doing about half of it on the highway at 70-90mph, half on a smaller main road at 40-50mph.

And 6 l/100km(47mpg) over 164km(100mi), Doing some city traffic riding and mostly smaller main roads.

It makes a big difference if you ride at stable pace, be it 60mph or 100mph and tuck well behind the fairing. Around 60mpg is achieveable.

Accelerating and braking in traffic bumps the consumption up. Riding upright, I have to twist the throttle up a bit to keep the same pace. So it has a clear effect too.

I do have the same attitude, though, so I haven't looked into this. Mpg is of no meaning for me, unless it runs out all the time. 19litres(~5U.S. gal.)@~6 l/100km(~40mpg) has enough range for me. And the reserve in the tank is okay, I guess.

Only issues I had, it was 2-4C(35-40F) and slightly raining all the time. And got dark, the anti-fog pinlock creates annoying ghost images in the visor.

Honda electronics also got to me. When switching to high beam, the lights shut down totally. Very safe and nice in total darkness and wet, crap roads :)

Notice the nice 80's/90's riding suit ;)
Despite the looks, it kept me warm and dry.[IMG]

    Ethanol has three major problems.
It’s extremely corrosive and not just to metal , it absorbs moisture, and after a couple of weeks standing it starts to separate.
In other words, it is seriously shit.
They tried to make E10 compulsory here a few years back, luckily there was such a strong outrage to it that the government changed their minds. Now it is just an option , normal fuel is available at every servo.
To add to that , it is subsidized so our taxes pay for it, and food stocks go to producing it when half the world is starving .
Who the F*¥<k though of it?

Here in the Charlotte,NC market, QT has 87 non-ethanol. I run that exclusively in all of my small motors and motorcycles.
I can't say that the milage is better, but it is a little piece of mind for $.30 per gallon extra.

On a side note: I did try a tank of 93 V Power on my 6th Gen and it ran like dog shit.

Hmm, I've only tested 95 and 98 and most motors run slightly better on the higher octane. Most being EFI systems, so they adapt to the fuel at hand.

This is not true unless the motor is a high compression engine or if the higher octane also happens to be ethanol-free.
