When engaging 1st gear from neutral the bike takes a jerky lurch forwards. Has anyone else found this happening?

I assume it only does this once after sitting overnight, and the next time you go from neutral to first it is normal?
If so, I have had this happen on other bikes. Clutch plates sticking together. Are you using the recommended oil?

If you have the rear wheel off the ground, does the wheel spin with the clutch pulled in when the
engine is warm? It's not totally unusual to feel a little jerk if you put the bike in gear immediately
after pulling the clutch lever. Especially if the bike is cold.

How many miles? Are you the first owner?

Saul: Thanks for the info. I'm waiting for a new drain plug to arrive and then I'll change the oil to Motul fully synthetic 30W/10. I don't know what oil is in at the moment. The bike is standing overnight and it's cold.

Before Alan, as I haven't changed the oil yet. I'm waiting for a new drain plug to arrive which is a posh one with a magnet in it.
I have another query. I want to change the final drive shaft oil but I want to know what size is the drain plug in case there's a crush washer on it ( I know it an allan key hd) and I need to get a new crush washer, so I need to know its size. I've scoured the net, and downloaded a service manual but nowhere can I find the size of the plug. Thinking about it I shall find out what the size of the allan key is and work it out from there. Unless you know the size. Or I'll phone a dealer. Thanks for your interest Alan.

I haven't tried that FJ... but I shall. It doesn't do it going from neutral to 2nd gear. It's no big deal really, it's bearable.

Yes I could squirrelman, if I had the tools, but the clutch seems ok. Funny enough I've been reading about bleeding the brake system and the use of a bleeder or a bleed tube. I'm weighing up the pros and cons of doing it myself and investing in some more tools or letting a dealer do it.

Too much oil in the Engine can make this clunk more pronounced, but lots of Different makes of Bike do this, especially when selecting 1st when cold for the first time. There has been some good advice to check if the rear wheel rotates on the centre stand, engine hot, 1st gear engaged, clutch in. It might rotate slowly, but should stop very easily on the brake. If it doesn't you have clutch drag.

Evening Alan. Yes, there have been some good pointers, pleased about that. When I got back earlier, when it was still light, I put the bike on the side stand and while I was round the the right hand side of the bike I glanced at the oil-level window and to my surprise I couldn't see any oil at all. I was in a rush and didn't put it on the centre stand and see what the level is. I'll do it tomorrow. Like the old saying: " Why do today what can be done tomorrow" ha ha.

Hey Saul, Here is the info on the final drive drain plug gasket:
    GASKET (8MM)
    Honda part number: 90471-580-000
It is a metal gasket similar to a washer. Hope this helps.

I couldn't wait for the new engine oil drain plug to come, it arrives sometime in March, ebay order, so I changed the oil last Saturday and my word it is so much more smoother. The oil that came out was rank - black as sunny day in Scotland. The jerk when engaging 1st gear from neutral is still there but it's no problem as I don't go into neutral when riding only at the side of the road.

No, I think the clutch is dragging slightly as the rear wheel turns slowly when in neutral. I'm off on a big ride in March/Aprill and I'm thinking of a service.

The rear wheel turning when in neutral has nothing to do with the clutch. Did it do that before you
changed the oil? Does it still do it? It shouldn't do it at all. If it does, you have something dragging
but it isn't the clutch. Make sure you put in the right viscosity oil.

It's not unusual to see it with a bike that has a separate gearbox, and heavy gear oil, but you definitely shouldn't
see it with a wet clutch/sump and unit gearbox.

Or did you mispeak and meant to say "in gear with the clutch pulled in"? Which would be pretty normal.
