Yeah, be ultra careful doing that, most US drivers are not ready for the convenience that a
motorcycle can offer. A lot of responses, I think anyway, will be "What the hell you doin'
tryin' to get in front of me? Let's see how you like a door openin' in front of you.".

YEP! Utah is not really Motorcycle friendly in populated areas. We are viewed as annoying and arrogant. Riding to fast or are part of a nuisance society. If you do ride threw thank god the best routes are rural areas and not very prone to assholes and they view us as revenue and support us. Salt Lake City and the populated areas are full of pricks and distracted drivers like most states.

Hopefully your cagers will get used to it and accept it after a time.
    They pretty much do here.

    Agreed.
If it's only now being legalized, be careful. Cagers often don't see that it also benefits them and just get their panties in a bunch, thinking that you are somehow cheating them by being more efficient.

Over here, lanesplitting has been legal for as long as I can remember, and I still get the angry thinskins every once in a while. The simple fact is that most drivers don't know the law. In fact, I will bet you that if tested on basic traffic laws, 90%+ of drivers would fail miserably.

Just use common sense and only do it when there is enough room. And be sure to scan ahead for any movement.

Not a lot really, mostly just semantics. "Lane splitting" generally just refers to moving between the lanes at any speed.
"Lane filtering" seems to mean moving at a slower pace, and especially moving forward at stoplights to be first away.

    IMO anyway.

Yeah, filtering, splitting, pretty much the same. Also lane sharing.

Nothing like putting between 30 cars in line to the front at the light, then it goes green and, brappp! :)

I think the "Smug" factor of pissing all the cagers off is delightful!

Agree. Not worth the risk of some sick asshat opening a door. I deal with people like that by not riding in traffic. Only the rural twisties. A VFR is only recreation for me. Cages are for transportation.

I read about this not long ago and I'm so happy for all Utah riders. Hopefully more states allow it.

Also agree, it will take years before urbanized Utah drivers get used to bikers going between cars. Their first reaction will be anger, disdain, and hatred for riders "cheating" and getting ahead of them in traffic, with the possibility of aggressive behavior to teach riders a lesson. I rarely but still do experience that here in CA. On a few instances I've had to verbally let drivers know it is legal in an assertive manner. They're just pissed off at something and I happen to be at the right time right place for them to vent.

So lane filtering is now officially legal here in Utah. Haven't been bold enough to try it though. I think we still have some of the craziest drivers in the country.

Yeah, I think I'd only lane filter on deserted roads until I think people have gotten used
    to it...about 15 years. :)
