I though this would be of interest, at least to give those of you thinking about trading or selling your older VFR800.

I went to a dealership to view a used bike (have to choose something before the dealership seriously talks to you). I brought my 2007 VFR800 with 64k miles on it. The bike is in very good shape, runs well, no issues (except for the cold clutch basket chatter).

After they Sales Manager went over my bike to look for any obvious flaws (and could not find any), he mentioned to me that my subframe finish was worn out. I explained to him that of course the paint is faded from being outside riding around for 12 years and 64k miles. DUH! We sat down to "deal", he gave me a quote for $1,500 for my bike. Obviously a low ball. Or was it? I thought about how much I would pay for my VFR800 if I were to buy one and I know I would not pay more than $3k OTD for it. I said I wanted $2k, they went up to $2.2k if I bought their bike the same day.

Sales Manager explained to me that he could NOT sell my bike on his showroom due to the miles. He said if it had 30k miles he would. But above that it would be very difficult to make any kind of money and usually the bikes are auctioned off into the Abyss, never to be seen or heard from again. He told me 99% of dealerships do not want to re-sell high mileage bikes because customers are afraid of them. So some of these bikes either get sold to a handful of Mom & Pop type operations who specialize in low, low priced, well used bikes, or get auctioned off overseas where the value of used bikes are still profitable. Just not in North America.

Counting what I paid for my last 2 bikes :
    (BMW) K1300S - new : 17000€ (2010)
    (Suzuki) GSX-S1000 - new : 13800€ (2016)

    Wanting to sell these :
K1300S - 118000 km : my dealer didn't even want to make me a price
GSX-S1000 - 23000 km : my dealer didn't even want to make me a price

So I guess it's the fate of anyone selling his/her bike : dealers are only interested in selling new bikes

    Then again, I bought :
VFR800F 8th gen - second hand - 3000 km on the clock : 7500€. Well, the VFR800F is a bike at half the price of my previous ones, running at least as nicely as these "full-blown" bikes. And you know what ? I am PRETTY CONFIDENT I'll be able to sell it at a FAIR second (third) hand price once I reach 130000 km. And if the dealer doesn't want it, I'm sure others will still want to pay me a fair price for it... It's a Honda, after all (and I can tell : I had a problem-free Deauville with 157000 km ...)

I was susprised I even was offered $2.2k. Because I was sure my bike would be for sale for $2.5k at retail level.

And judging by the prices of used motorcycles here in the Western US, I don't think I will buy a new bike any time soon. There are a ton of great buys out there. I looked at a 2005 Kawasaki ZX10R (aka the widowmaker) with just 21k miles for $4k from motivated private seller. I'm quite sure he would part with it for $3k or close to $3k.

Seems like used bike prices in general are dropping down. I think thats in part that the popularity of motorcycling is fading.
That doesnt help if you want to sell, and if you want to buy its a plus...
(Me - I have 3 bikes now I'm drooling about.)

On the '06 - I think $2800 is fair... I would check NADA value too.

As much as I want to get that ZX10R, I can't until I sell another bike. I have 3, and if I get a 4th I would get divorced.
