A few days ago, I lifted my gas tank to see if the previous owner had done the "flapper" and "snorkel" mods. Upon seeing that they had indeed been done, I deduced a ride was in order. The next day, the engine arbitrarily stopped at a red light. it took some serious encouragement to start up again but it eventually did. after that, I could feel that it wanted to poop out again so I had to be ruthless with the throttle keeping the rpm's up, even at stand stills... some times it would clear up suddenly for about 5 seconds (which is super dangerous, getting an unexpected surge of power).

today I installed a new fuel filter, the last one was extremely restricted. I will Finnish the job tomorrow, as I was struggling to connect all the tubes and lines.

Does anyone have any recommendations or ideas as to what this could be? (other than the fuel filter)
my friend says that my MAF sensor might be the issue...

Hi Irah. Did you check the airbox? Stupid mice can setup their apartment in there and it chokes off the motor.
    Good luck.

Hi Laker, I opened up the airbox... no mouse nest but I did find pinholes in the air filter, so that definitely needs replacing. Today I got the new fuel filter installed but im still having similar problems.. a new one is my "F1" light flashing. I believe this is a warning light regarding the fuel injection. Hopefully that just air in the lines that needs to be worked out a little. Heres another theory: maybe the guy before me had the bike tuned (when he upgraded the exhaust ) WITH the old, restricted fuel filter. meaning its hella rich now which would explain the F1 alert. although it still feels lean and loves to stall.

Thanks again for the recommendation. Bad air filter = engine damage, so I'm glad you pointed that out.

The FI light blinks to tell you what the problem is. There are different codes for different problems.
If there’s no power commander installed the bike can’t have been retuned.
I think your problem lays elsewhere.

Could be bad or old fuel.

thanks for all the replies. I took the bike to the shop... after a few weeks and going way overbudget I'm picking it up tomorrow to troubleshoot myself. The problem is electrical. the most recent update was an error from the map sensor (map has been replaced). I believe there is a short somewhere, which is what's causing the battery to drain, and other electric glitches (fuel gauge jumps). Anyone else having similar problems with a mysterious short?

Not saying that this is your issue, but the 5G does have a common earthing block that has given some folks issues in the past. The block is taped into the main loom below the seat on the left of the rear subframe. A common fix is to remove the block connector and solder the wires into a bunch with a dedicated earthing wire to the chassis.

I'd suggest that you clear the FI fault codes before progressing further as these get stored until cleared; it is possible the MAP sensor fault may simply be due to the engine being started with the MAP connector or the vacuum hose disconnected during diagnosis.
