So I have mentioned before that my wife and I traded bikes, she get the gen 6 VFR800 and I get the 18 street triple. She took it off the road for winter and did a heap of work like braided brake lines and rebuilt the brake and clutch master cylinders and painted the wheel...etc. The point is the bike sat for 4 months.

We just did an oil change and when the bike got warm it started to clack, its fine when cold. It sounds like the top end.

Best lift the tank and use a mechanic's stethescope to narrow down the noisy area.

 

almost certainly. how many miles - they last about 36,000m.

plenty of threads on here about them - its more likely the front BUT CHANGE BOTH.
Front is 'harder' but you DO NOT NEED TO REMOVE the INTAKE although its fiddly.
Get the OEM tensioners & also get new washers.
